Title: 2004 Screen debate
Post by: Perenialnovice on January 29, 2014, 18:06:56
OK so picked her up a few days ago.
I am 13.5 stone and 6' 1"
The standard screen works OK in mid position. I can see why some people don't complain.
But for me, I see what you blokes mean about buffetting; my cheeks ( face ) were doing a shimmy inside my helmet,  and my head was going from side to side. No way could that be put up with. How the hell did this bike get left like this in development?
Not good. I crouched and still the same buffetting- so not sure being tall or short would be any different.

new AirFlow screen for £111.00 off ebay.

OK so wind is less on the face of the helmet and quieter. As with otehr threads you can motor along with the visor up at 80mph.
Dead easy to adjust on-the-go aswell.
Though you will be riding looking through the screen if you are short than me- even with it in the lowest position. I can see over it OK in the lowest position. Riding looking through it is OK, but if you are not going fast enough so the rain blows off it - this is a problem; and impossible if it is grubby.
Buffeting is still there - probably worse! If I put my hand by the mirror, I cannot hold it still with the buffetting. In fact the whole bike is now shimmying along the road- feels like a knackered Tyre!
Next, wil be to remove the mirrors and see if the buffetting goes.

I have had issues with screens with just about every bike I had. I reached a fairly good compromise on my 04 Tiger with a tall ish screen and a foil on it. But got a very tiring wind blast on my shoulders, that I felt pushed my arse into the saddle. In comes a gel seat to help that!

I will add later about the mirrors. I will look at getting some Aprillia Tuono mirrors , but I want decent ones , not ones that keep moving in the wind.

Other than that I find the engine is pulling back, there is somethng wrong, it sort of surges and then feels like the back brake is on. And somehow or other I missed the fact that it has a small end knock from cold - until it is warm. :wtf:

Yes, one of the most important things for buffeting issue is to change mirrors and put them on extenders. I'm 6'2.5", went to Givi Airflow, Aprilia Tuono mirrors and extenders. All that setup, 90% of buffeting is gone. I'm still fighting those 10%.

I'll probably get the mirrors on recommendation then. the mirrors are 'only £34.00 o Ebay- is that about right?  seems cheap - they  are copies though.
And I will get the extenders.
I will add introduction later this week.

I'm currently waiting for these to arrive so I can try them as an alternative to the standard mirrors;

Ordered the mirrors ( per link above) and extenders
Bit concerned about extending the mirrors, as I filter in traffic everyday
I will try em out, maybe the mirrors on their own will be good enough

I'll let you know as soon as I get them
In the mean time, my mudguard extender has arrived.
And the sun is out- I can investigate the massive clonking noise from the front- I'm sure it is not just the forks.

Yes, they're on my Vstrom right now. Don't forget to take the adaptor off with your old mirrors, these screw straight into the stem on the lever assembly. The adaptor that's on your bike now, the silver bit, reverses the thread for the 'oh-so-shit' barn door mirrors.

I just got a set of these to see what difference they make. They are nice and flexible but alot smaller than the standard wee set, so be warned if you decide to try them.

Fianally got the Aprillia mirrors on- buffetting: what buffetting?
They are smaller, but that does not make them worse as the view from the originals included alot my shoulder anyway.
The only niggle is they are nearer to me by a few inches- so a more pronounced look accross to them is needed. I have the extenders, I might try them.
Fitting them was odd- the right hand one tightened up in the wrong positon; so I had to find some washers to adjust it.
next thing I need is some small LED indicator reminders; as I keep having to look down all the time to see if I have left the indicators on.
Anybdy seen a kit for this?

The mirrors should tighten down fully, then you use the compression nut at the top of the fitting to clamp it in the right position.
