Three teeth off the rear sprocket is around the same as one on the front,but you will have to shorten your chain. I am currently doing the same at the moment on my 800 and will be going down from a 50 tooth rear sprocket to a 46 tooth, the 126 link chain will need replacing for 122 or 124 link chain.
Depending on how worn your change is you could try a rear sprocket with two teeth less which might be enough for you.
