Title: Givi Airflow - I've seen the light...!
Post by: Artyman on March 28, 2022, 18:34:32
Okay. I'm not easily impressed with things. Some things do impress me. Things like Concorde, the Harrier Jump Jet, U2's Joshua Tree, Dolly Parton, chicken bhoona, Yorkshire tea bags and Vstroms.... So I've been looking at all the bla-bla about the Givi Airflow screens and I've been mulling it over...

Now I do realise that sometimes adults are like sheep, and bikers especially so. Someone gets a purple unicorn whirlygig on their bike and we all tend to follow suit, and being a bit of a sceptical old bar-steward I did wonder if all the Airflow blokes were just bolting on another shiny-bit.

So, because the buffeting from the standard screen is so crap I thought I'd give it a punt and buy an Airflow, all the time wondering if I was wasting my money.  It arrived on Saturday and I finally motivated myself and fitted it today. I went on very quickly and easily and in no time at all I was heading onto the road for a blast.

Wow.........!

Double wow...!!

It works....!!!

Its the dogs danglies....!!!!

Yeah. Standard stuff at standard speed but then I hit the open road. We've got a 5-mile stretch in the hills nearby which is very good tarmac with few cars in the afternoon, so that's where I headed and then I opened her up. I got up to Warp-speed ten and beyond just held it there and - she was sooooooo happy - and I still had my visor up.

Seriously, seriously, seriously impressed.  Its much quieter. No buffeting on my head and arms. Its brills.

So, I apologise for being so sceptical and long live the Givi Airflow.

BTW. I bought it from J & B Motorcycles in Boston. Ordered in the morning, despatched in the afternoon and arrived the next day. Brills.

a purple unicorn

You rang!?

I've considered the Airflow, still playing with adjusting the bottom of my OE screen (and perhaps one of those screen deflectors). Will do if nothing else works!

Screen deflector did nothing for me , so I had to go the airflow route which works brilliantly.

As much as it was good to ride her pre-airflow, it’s now become a pleasure to ride at motorway speeds.

Airflow on the 1050 is fantastic.  Pig ugly though,  but I don't have to look at it when riding.

Yesterday I rode at night for about an hour and a half. I went to Oban yesterday and overstayed my welcome and it was dark when I left. No problem it would seem - until I turned the lights on.

The lower part of the outside Givi Airflow (the one that slides up and down) catches a fair amount of light from the headlight so the screen behind the console looked like the Blackpool illuminations. Very annoying and also distracting considering the roads back from Oban to civilisation has no streetlights.

So, today I sat there with a mug of tea to decide what to do and I came up with an idea - to paint the lower half of the upper screen black.

So, my question is…. Has anyone else done this? If so, what paint did you use, because I wouldn’t want to spray or paint it only for the paint to start flaking off.

Or, do you think I should take it to one of those places that wrap cars? Would they be able to wrap the lower part. Would it look stupid…?

Yours, Thomas Edison’s younger son…

I would apply sticky black tape one stripe at a time until you are not bothered bythe light. Then you will have some idea of where to paint up to. I would mask the screen above that line and apply the paint to the inside of the screen.

It's also any issue on KTM's, "frosting" the bottom couple of inches sorts it.

I bought a Givi D7703ST. It has a dark lower. Don't know if they make a similar one for your bike.

Did you try a sharpie type felt pen on the edge of the screen all around. If stray light is hitting the edge it may be having a prismatic effect on the flat plane of the screen.

Pig ugly though.

You have a daft beak. Nobody will notice your screen  :smirk:

To stop light traveling through Perspex paint the edges.

It also changes the look of the Perspex and gives it a slight looking tint , even though its not.

I had a Givi airflow on my L2 for my RTW trip. The bike arrived back from the crash scene in Kazakhstan with a screen that had been bleached by the sun for 6 months. So I tried some different screens as one has to admit the Givi is not the prettiest. Tried Puig (over 3000 miles - noisy), tried MCA tint (looks good, not much better than stock if you are tall), tried Suzuki touring (bit better than MCA). Went and bought another Airflow. Problem solved!
