Keis Battery Aftermarket Connector?
« on: November 26, 2018, 11:59:02 »
I must be getting soft...after years of riding in all weathers I finally bought a Keis heated vest this weekend and what a difference it made on my commute this morning, however, I'm not too keen on being tethered to the bike and I would of bought a battery with it if they wasn't so bloody expensive!

The thing is I have several power banks to charge phones etc when camping all considerably cheaper than the Keis branded ones but they are only USB power out.

Does anybody know of a aftermarket lead that I could buy to utilise my powerbanks?

I think I have just discovered why there isn't such a lead...
USB power banks out put is 5v
Keis Battery pack is 12v
and that's why they are probably so expensive.

I made my own battery pack using some cells from a drill battery. The connector was just a standard DC jack, I found one laying around in the garage. I use it with my heated vest while walking the dog, lasts hours.

I'd rather be plugged in on the bike, much less hassle.

What is your concern about being connected to the bike?

My concern was walking away from the bike still connected and damaging the lead/vest.
I guess it's something I'll get used to over time though.

No offence bigpie but that battery looks like an accident waiting to happen!

Indeed it does, it's since been shrink wrapped etc and is somewhat safer.

If you think this pack is unsafe, you should see my 84v pack capable of >200a discharge peak. lol lol

My keiss is connected to the battery charging lead which is double cable tied to the frame. I just pull it out when I'm getting off the bike. Sometimes I forget and it pulls out just the same.

I have had the Keis heated inner gloves for the past 3 years connected to the bike..... I often forget to unplug and walk away.... the connector just pops out and the gloves are still going strong.
I wouldn't worry.. you will never get dragged with the bike.

If you think that battery pack looks dodgy you should see TLPower's Baader-Meinhof vest!

I was just thinking of the same thing Rusty Nuts. Although I believe it worked quite well and TLP is still very much alive.

lol@Pug27, I've given you a "like" for "accident waiting to happen". Being connected to any of bigpie's electric vehicles would be the least of your concerns. I still shudder at the thought of "that" skateboard.

Thanks for all advice, I'm going to stick with the bike connector for now, it's something I will get used to over time I suppose as I'm certainley not messing around with Lithium batteries....again.
This was the effect of only one battery letting go on my e cig

Those e-cigs really draw a lot of current, had you just been using it?

Was the cell a cheap Chinese jobbie or a low 'C' rating? They're also pretty easy to short circuit if the wrap is slightly damaged.

It was a Samsung or Sony 18650. I'd just put them in after a full charge. To be fair I think the wrap may have been slightly damaged at the bottom and I knew the risk but it did go supernova almost instantly.
Certainley a wake up call on battery safety. I now re wrap as soon as I see the slightest amount of damage!
