Greetings from Wells
« on: July 14, 2018, 16:19:51 »
Hello, All!

I've recently bought a 2011 DL650 with just under 25k on it, in pretty good nick. I traded in a BMW F800GS, which was getting a bit old and heavy, and am very pleased with the change.

The only thing I didn't like about the DL was the fact that the gearbox was louder than the exhaust, so after selling a few extras from the BMW, (and an exchange of messages with the Rat) I bought a Delkevic system with a 250mm stubby stainless silencer, and with a lot of help from my nephew, it is now fitted.

What a difference! I can't detect any difference in performance, but the sound is wonderful. No more sewing machine - a proper deep 650 vee-twin sort of noise. I'm a bass player, and I really appreciate the rumble. I also think it looks hugely better - even with the trim panels, the old kinked thing is ugly, and without them its true hideousness shines out.

Fitting tips:
  • removing the pillion footrest makes the job a lot easier
  • you may need two extension bars to get the 13mm socket on the nut of the rear header clip
  • yes, you do have to remove the front header pipe and re-fit it. It gives you a lot more room to jiggle the pipe off the rear header
  • the stainless strap to hold the silencer on is savagely sharp before you fit the rubber padding - and it's hard to tell the blood from the gasket goo!

If anyone needs a 2004-2011 exhaust in pretty good condition, my old one is on eBay!

I've attached a few photos,

Unless you desperately want to get rid of it, I would hang onto the standard exhaust in case you want to sell the bike one day.  I think I went past you while taking the long way home from work last week from Bristol to Frome via the Mendips.
