How deep?
« on: October 03, 2009, 20:48:22 »
Is the rubber on a brand new Trail Wing front tyre? Only I've just found a tack in the deepest part of the tread, pulled it out (Doh!) and found it was 7mm long
So is it going to go flat on me overnight?

Hold the tack next to the tread and judge it from that.

It will give you an idea of how far it has gone into the main body of the tyre.

I wouldn't worry Stu. Your not using your bike anyway as your sick.

One day, someone showed me a glass of water that was half full.  And he said, "Is it half full or half empty?"  So I drank the water.  No more problem.

Thanks Dave  :GRR:  ###

Was doing some customising last night when I spotted it. Judging by the holding it up to the tread technique, I reckon it may have gone into the main carcass by about 2mm. Just wondered if there were any tyre guru types who would know how deep the carcass is on one?

E-mailed Bridgestone at the weekend and, fair play, got an e-mail thismorning saying that they are looking into it and will get back to me. Not bad really.

Stu

JUST got this:

Right…. so by the sounds of your query, it would seem that the penetration you mention is more or less in the centre of the tread.

The conditions for general repair usually state that if the tyre is penetrated through to the casing stucture, then it would be quite difficult to repair. (these types of deep penetration can damage the internal steel structure of the tyre, and can let moisture in – even after the repair)

If a dealer were to attempt a repair, it would be at his own discretion.

At BSUK, we tend to to air on the side of caution, and would most definitely suggest a replacement tyre be fitted. (purely due to the sheer length of the offending object)

Hopefully this helps you. – Any questions, please contact us in the Technical Dept.

Thank you & kind regards

Paul

Why don't you get some puncture safe or goop and whack it in before it starts to go down.
When I was earning my living as a courier I/we swore by the stuff.

deflate tyre, remove the centre of the valve, squeeze in the correct amount(usually half the bottle),put valve back in,re-infate,job done.
did my scoot at the weekend, had a large screw in the centre of the tread, put the goop in,pumped the tyre up and then pulled the screw out which was around an inch long and the hole sealed in seconds.

Why not just check the pressure over a wet weekend when not using your bike? I had a similar experience with a new tyre and a nail which despite its length went in at an angle in the end and it didn't actually enter the main inflated section of the tyre fortunately. Not surprised you were advised to get a new one, they are a business in the end!  :thumb:
