urgent advice needed please re: oil
« on: September 16, 2013, 06:55:27 »
in italy atm and tge oil level on bike is slightly above low. would like to top it up. I have castrol power 1 'racing 4t 10/40 (fully synthetic).in the bike at present. I can't find any fully synthetic at any petrol station. only able to get castrol power 1 4t 10/40. (semi synthetic).

I was wondering if I could top the oil up with some semi synthetic? or is that a no no?

just didn't know if you could mix semi and fully synthetic. for all it would take to top it up.

As strommer says, no worries about it...They just mix in together, and its 100% better than having low oil level. Enjoy your hol! :thumb:

You only get problems mixing fully synthetic with 100% mineral oil, it'll be fine.

ah good job had to lash 200ml into it. will need to keep an eye on it. don't like the idea of the bike using that much in 1300miles or so. any ideas anyone?

That's okay too. Many synthetics are mineral oil based anyway. http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Oils1.html

200ml in 1,300 miles isn't a massive oil consumption. Just keep and eye on it and it'll be fine.

Use anything to keep moving and decide how soon to change it afterwards IMHO. Any motorcycle oil goes to the next oil change, most diesel oils will too. It's chainsaw and petrol car stuff you want out within hundreds rather than thousands of miles. Don't get all Ewan and Charlie about it either, anything that doesn't make the clutch slip is taking life off the end of things not now, chances are if you do it once now some bloke who buys a rat in 2020 will neither notice nor care.

2300miles done in the trip so far and the bike has used 750ml of oil   what's up with that? can't visibly see any leaks anywhere either.... bike working sometimes doing tight alpine passes like stelvio furka etc. would that cause it? she has never used this much oil before between a service

Hello ali

yeh found better weather since leaving austria funnily enough. italy had some fantastic roads immense fun. didn't like the stelvio that much, enjoyed the furka pass more. just at the swiss/italian border for another night then starting route napolean tomorrow. having a rest day today to let the body recover a bit.

yeh got the clutch fluid sorted. never needed topping up again since leaving yours. cable tied the clutch lever in overnight for a couple of nights and was fine. bike will be getting booked in for a service when I get back though

Where are you filling the oil level to? The top of the glass isn't always the right choice if it just makes more to blow out of a breather. You'd know if it was burning it. Take a look at the coolant for piece of mind. If you are gaining coolant you have Rotaxing going on.

The stock system couldn't handle the stock devices. It didn't need to. The battery and lights were off for five years.
