Replacement for the DL650
« on: December 19, 2017, 18:37:03 »
After 31,000 trouble free miles (often two up) I found I was beginning to find the limitations of the little Strom. Whilst it could keep up with the bigger bikes; it was revving it's nuts off. So, when my son passed his test I gave him the 650 and had an excuse to go and buy something a little bigger.
I was very impressed with the KTM 1290 GT; my pillion wasn't. The Africa Twin was amazing, very smooth, torquey and flickable (my pillion still wasn't impressed). So I test rode the Multistrada 1200s which got the thumbs up from the back seat. So, I have just collected the new 1260 ST  (2018) version one of the first in the country and I am not disappointed :)

Very very nice!
I have a KTM sdr 1290, I can sum that up in two words...erm,wow!
I keep looking at the KTM  adventure range, my mate had the 1190 adventure r, that is an incredible machine, but I just love my Strom so it stays .

I'm a massive fan of the multistrada 1200 and I have my eye on the previous model (2010-2014) as a Vstrom replacement. I also think I'm having ride my 650 too hard to keep up with others, but it does do it very well.

I'm really torn what to do, I want another bike but don't want to give up my wee in order to have it, but I haven't got space for anymore bikes.

Very Expensive Nice. I bet that doesn't hang around. You will be keeping up with planes now.

Someone turned up to Stromtrekkers 6 on a Multistrada.

lol lol lol Yes I've been rumbled :shy: Not only has it got a beak it also has nostrils! but I can't see it's face when I'm enjoying it.

I can't think of another forum where the members are so positive about other choices of machine. Thank you for the positive comments (but don't stop taking the p***). :)

Test rode a 12 plate a couple of years ago.
Bloody hell it accelerates quickly and the sound, even with the stock exhaust was to die for.

A bit too much outlay for me to put 18k a year on, but I'd have loved one as a toy.

Happy new bike and welcome to :traitor:

The nostrils and beak are to do with its heritage, stemming from a duck billed platypus.... :icon_wink:

Saw a dealer selling the 1290 Superduke GT at over 3 grand off list price, if you're still tempted Falkland Bomber.  Have a google, think it was Drysdales oop Northish.

I sold my old 650 Vstrom and went the Italian route.  Bought an Aprilia Caponord 1200 Travel Pack.  I still have the bike and enjoy riding it when I get the chance.
As for my next bike, would I go the Italian route again - no, too many silly little things that go wrong, nothing serious, just tedious.  Plus of course the Aprilia dealer network isn't too good.
So the next bike I have will be German, and no not a R1200GS, I have tried them and really didn't like the ride.  Plus of course I quite like my first name and don't want to be called Charlie or Ewan.
The bike that will get my vote next time round will be the BMW S1000XR. I like the ride it gives, as does the wife.  Smooth (at high and low speeds, something a V Twin can't match), comfortable, handles well and seems to hold its price reasonably well. The one I test rode had all the bells and whistles I need and service intervals seem to be OK.
But I will still have 2 V Twins in the garage, my 2006 Vstrom 1000 GT and my Aprilia 750 Dorsoduro for short, solo, fun miles.
Have fun with your Ducati though, they seem to get good write ups and owners seem to love them. But next time you are looking for a change, take a test ride on the S1000XR, you might even end up buying one :)
