Stalling when cold Tps??
« on: March 25, 2024, 17:19:23 »
Hi all,... So I'm slowly working through the issues on the 2004 650 I picked up to keep me entertained...I have an issue with the bike stalling when cold. It starts fine and runs for a few minutes then slowly idles down and will eventually stall. If ridden immediately from starting it will stall when the clutch is pulled in until It has fully warmed up. Once warm it seems to run and idle fine.

Reading through the forum I'm unsure if what I'm looking at is a Tps issue or a low idle adjustment issue. So I'm asking for opinions before I start fiddling...

Bike is a 2004 DL650 with 35k miles

Thanks all

You can check the tps fairly easily using the dealer mode, putting the bike into dealer mode is explained here;

The specifics of checking the tps are outlined in the the FI diagnosis section of the service manual in the downloads area of the site;
https://www.v-strom.co.uk/downloads.htm

If the tps is correct then I would check your fast idle. The manual lists 1800-2400rpm at 25C. With the temperatures we have at the moment, I would expect the bike to run at 2k plus on first fire and take a good few minutes to settle down to normal idle, ideally once the temperature guage has at least 1 if not 2 bars showing.

If both tps and fast idle seem OK then I'd move on to throttle body balance and checking the secondary throttle bodies as well.

* The fact that all seems fine once fully up to temperature would lean me towards the fast idle setting being too low but the tps is an easy check so worth doing anyway. Your symptoms are very similar to how mine behaved and it was fast idle for me.

Great thanks for that. I was struggling to work out what to start with... I'll work through that and see where I get to...

Please provide feedback on any progress in diagnosing the cause and / or what was found.

Will do... I'll get on with it and post back when the weather has reverted back to it's early spring setting rather than the late November setting that we seem to be stuck on (I don't have a garage)....
