what are the [bots] in the 'whos on line field

Dear... admin

Seen lots of GOOGLE[bot] and YAHOO[bot] registered down in the 'whos online' area....what are they, what are they doing and why do they randomly pop up?

I submit the site to the various Search Engines and they send in the bots  :D  to have a sniff around to pick up keywords etc.
