2014 DL1000 pannier options?
« on: February 09, 2024, 17:15:45 »
So.. I am hoping to get a couple of big trips away in this year.. I shall take tent etc, may end up a combination camping and BnB etc..
I have the std Suzuki "integrated" panniers on and find them a bit small on the inside really.. OK for day to day and commuting etc..
Looking at what might be available to replace them..
I don't want the big old square ally boxes that's the trend...
I have some giving monkeys of different flavours, but what actually fits?.
Seems the only givi rail kit available is the "quick release" system, which I am not bothered about as the panniers pretty much live on the bike, but may be the only frame kit...  Can pick up a set of used V series panniers or other monkey used for sensible price..
What givi/kappa are people running?
Shad any good??
Cheers

Have a look at the DUSC panniers, https://sw-motech.us/products/luggage/side+cases/

Are you on your own or is the pillion seat spare?
If it's spare then what about using a decent sized waterproof roll bag on that for your camping gear? Along with your 'smaller' panniers, top box & maybe a tank bag?
Lomo even do crash bar bags if you have them fitted.

Sorry Neil, borrowed your bike.  :icon_wink:
My camping gear, on the V-Strom, is rolled in the groundsheet.

+1 for a dry bag on the pillion seat. Gives you a little backrest, frees up the top box mount for a box, and the bag rests on panniers if you have them fitted.

Also useful for just bunging inside your tent and sorting stuff out afterwards, especially useful if it's pishing it down.

Should have clarified..
Have a givi 55/57L top box on..
Yes I can use a "roll bag" on the seat but that's not very secure.. (I have bags to use..)
It's more specifically if I replace the Suzuki panniers. Not just "How do I carry more stuff"  They are weighty empty and very inefficient on space, an over complicated design in my book.. that's my issue with them..

Both solo and 2 up use..
Solo is always going to be easier, but 2 up often a challenge from past experiences and the Suzuki ones are going to add to the challenge

So.. following on from lots of searching as to what can and will fit..
The v35/37's look to fit the bill of what I need, but the mounting racks are not available for my year.. (although "monokey" these require a shaped mounting bracket so don't fit any original monokey frames/mounts, V Series should be called monokey 2)
The "quick release" mounts will take std monokey fair.. but I don't want to "quick release" option for a couple of reasons.
The fixed "CAM" versions are only supposed to take a specific box.. but... You can buy a retrofit kit to let them take any "normal" monokey box..
Ordered a set of "CAM" and the adapter kit.. will try a monokey E series on and then see what's what and go from there..

Right..
The PL3105 "CAM" frames (14-17 1000's) will not take the "adapter"kit.  There is no provision for the upper catch to mount..
Which on the face of it, makes these frames next to useless..  (unless you want the trekker outback panniers, which are the only ones that fit).
On the up side.. the frames are fantastically strong and no flex.. (unlike the removable version)
So...not to be defeated and as ever creative.. I have knocked up a couple of adapters to take the upper Monokey mount.. This will allow me to utilise any original 3 point Monokey panniers on the bike..
Pics will follow..

Do you mean there are no holes drilled in the upper portion of the racks to take the two screws for the wedge?

Does your bodge look similar to this blokes? https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/converting-givi-cam-side-to-monokey.430293/

I'm intrigued!

"Bodge"..    lol. It's an upgrade..  Givi has made the universal mounting frames now.. They just won't be doing the older bikes..
well.. it obviously has some similarity... But I wasn't happy to drill that casting as it doesn't seem particularly robust in the middle and doesn't have the reinforcing rib.. so mine is of 3mm alloy extrusion, which will only bend and not fracture (the catch in the pannier lock is going to break before the alloy bends though..)

Should have them all wrapped up by tomorrow eve (I hope)..
I look forward to your disapproval of my bodge.   :auto-dirtbike:

Nothing wrong with a well executed bodge, I'm fond of them myself!
