Anakee 2 - split?
« on: March 11, 2014, 12:18:24 »
Has anyone heard of a tyre splitting itself?
I got on my bike to ride down town this morning and was schocked to see the rear tyre aparently split. The tye is nearly 2 years old and has done about 4000 miles. It has no puncture in it - and doesn't look like a knife cut.

Comments? I was going to upload the pictures - but apparently that is disabled on this board.

I've heard of tyres cracking in between the treads, especially on the dual purpose types like the Anakee. Where's the split interms of tread / sidewall etc etc and how long?

You'll need to upload pictures to an online hosting site such as Flickr, then just link them here in your post.

This is the first time I've heard anything about an Anakee 2 splitting. Pictures would be very interesting.

The Anakee 2 has an earthing strip running it's circumference. This can give the appearance of a split as the rubber looks as if it has parted at this point. If in doubt get it checked out by a pro.

At the risk of sounding like a numpty, how does that work? Never heard of an earthing strip in a tyre before.

Well you learn something new every day. If that was my tyre I would be convinced it was knackered.

They can look really odd at times and they must have loads of people nervously pottering their way to the nearest tyre dealer to have them checked out.

I have Anakee 2s, I've never noticed a line. Do I not inspect my tyres enough?

Mine has the line, looks more like a join line than split to me so I never worry about it. Nice to know it's a feature and that there's a good explanation for it though.
