What have I done !
« on: May 28, 2015, 11:00:45 »
Ooops, blame me for this section, sorry.

Having left V-Strom ownership to buy a Moto Guzzi Stelvio, returned to V-Strom ownership and then left it again to buy a Supertenere it seems odds-on I'll be back again at some point  :)

What didn't you like about the Stelvio?

I went round the NEC show in Nov 2013, sat on all sorts of bikes to try them for size and I have to say the Stelivo had the worst ergonomics of all the bikes I've sat on bar the Harley Sportster 48- ref my comments on trying to squeeze a pineapple out of one's arse while licking your knee.

Everything was wrong for me, the pegs were all wrong and got right in the way when you put your feet down, the seat was like a very flat plank, the screen distorted the view ahead and the bars would need to be changed.
I was very uncomfortable on it, which was a big surprise and saddened me as it was one of the bikes I was thinking of to replace the Wee.  :bawl:
I wanted to like it

The other surprises were the FJR1300- also far to uncomfortable for me.   :rain:
and the 650 Burgman was very comfy and I walked away wanting one  :shy:

I think it was the Stelvio where if I sat on it my knees were wrapped around the cylinders.

Look on the bright side Martin, it'll keep your legs nice and warm!

Talking about warm. The Varadero warms up very fast and stays very hot. Nice to keep your legs warm.

I have to say Moto Guzzi have changed the Stelvio a bit since the model I had a 2010 NTX. The new, bigger 32L tank (up from a hopeless 18L) has meant they have re-shaped the stock seat to make it easier to get your feet down. The result is that it is a lot narrower at the front and does not give enough support to the bottom. The angle of the seat has also changed slightly. The good news is the original front section of the seat as fitted to '08 - '10 model bikes fits straight on and is very comfy, probably the best stock seat I've had.

The seat also needs to be in the higher position to maximise legroom, I also fitted some SW Motech comfort pegs  which were on my V-Strom 1000 (and are now on my S10, cracking value) and at 10mm lower made a huge difference and stopped my knees clattering the L/H/S cylinder head, the right pot is slightly more forward anyway.

As with most stock bikes the standard screen is poo and a Givi with MRA spoiler sorted it out a treat. I had it absolutely flat out in Germany chasing an E class Merc' with no buffeting at all, not bad for a Sat Nav indicated 141mph... As they are such a heavy old girl they are incredibly stable and are surprisingly agile through the bends too. It used to really eat tyres too, probably down to the weight ?

I probably would have another one at some point, maybe when it goes up to 1300cc as is often touted in the bike press.

I think I remember you saying you were getting 2,500 out of a rear when I was looking for road oriented options - you are probably right about the weight as I've now done 2,400 on a rear Scorpion Trail and it still has just shy of 6mm in the centre.

Yeah, the Stelvio used to destroy tyre's for fun, even killing an Anakee 2 in 3,500 miles - eeeek !
