Taking advantage of a small window of dry weather today I took the Fat Bob out for my first ride after having it delivered in January. 170 miles covered and just about got home as the temperature took a dive.

My pal Pepper, took the photo.
"Stand behind the bike" he said, "you'll be further away". Mates eh!
I put my chest protector on only to reduce the breeze pressing through the jacket zip. It has the advantage of making my chest look broader and disguising  the bulge of my belly.
I was persuaded to stay another twenty minutes for a cup of tea. Good move as on my way home down the A140 a car heading north crossed over to my carriageway and demolished some hedge and a telegraph pole I arrived just as the police closed the road. The driver had admitted to falling asleep. It had happened about twenty minutes previously. You never know when your luck is in do you?

Took the rear wheel out of the XJ600n as the carrier bearing was shot.
Need to find a replacement in work tomorrow.

I've also sorted the last few bit on the Varadero.
Like fitting the new side stand foot enlarger I bought a year ago and setting it back up for camping with the engine bar bags.
I also sorted mounting my walking pole to the bike as it won't fit in any of the boxes.

I think I'm going to start a new sport...

Not my bike but the first project of my mancave...
As part of my education I have learned to strip down and service the brakes including a seized piston and lever.

Today we started up this for the first time in 5 years. What an amazing feeling  :lala: :lala:

He's looking to see why I thought the back wheel was "one of those spare parts you always get"

Painted the clutch & generator covers at the weekend: the standard Suzuki poster paint had been washed off some years back by the look of it.
The SV ones are metallic black so I picked up a can of Vauxhall Diamond black form Halfords as a guess at a colour. Didn't have to be exact as I was painting all of them anyway, but fairly happy with the result. This week may see the engine back in the frame...

I'm working my way through the list of things needing tidied up, but still to decide what I'm doing with the fork sliders: I would powder coat them if I intended to keep the bike, but there's the question of expense v's return when it's a quick flip job. I'm coming round to just prep & paint as it doesn't involve disassembly, which seems to require special tools: probably change the fork oil though.
Seems pearl asbo orange is faster after all....

On the TDM the rear suspension linkage connects to a lug in the cast alloy frame. The lug bears the pin on which the needle roller is mounted. However, the two piece lug supports the pin on one side only (the pin butts up against the other side of the lug ( a bolt passes through the "blind side" for support). After removing the bolt there is no obvious way of removing the pin/ bearing.  As advised by the TDM forum ( thanks TLP)  I inserted into the pin, a 10mm rawl bolt type wall anchor and tightened it up so as to lock it in the pin. Then I applied heat from my hot air stripper for 5 minutes to induce some expansion into the lug. Then using a 20mm socket and some washers I tightened a further nut and managed to draw out the pin.  AND IT ONLY TOOK ME ALL DAY.  :fix: I cleaned and re-greased the bearings and popped the seals back in and today's job is to bolt everything back in place.  This is very definitely a weak spot and the general advice is to strip it down and re-grease every year. Failure of the grease in that bearing may result in it seizing and it is possible that the frame lug could break resulting in a write off. I am still wondering how Yamaha came up with such an awful design for what is, a "Service Item".

Brockett, well done on your persistence with the bearing. Is it possible to drill for a grease nipple? It would save a lot off faff if it could be lubed eternally.
