Andy someone just posted this video on the CRF1000 Africa Twin group. Some movement in the front sprocket but not enough to to justify the noise yours is making.

Getting mostly comments of they all do that sir but one suggestion of worn splines?

Almost sounds like the bearing cage has broken and your balls are rubbing together!

Sorry folks, work stopped play.

Well, if I slacken the chain (to the point of being too loose) the noise goes away. The chain looks to be in good order with no obvious tight spots, the bike has done less than 6k.

I'm going to take a punt at the front sprocket . If It is I'm not sure your warranty will cover that as it's wear and tear but you could try .

Can the front sprocket be turned around or is it offset.I did this on my Wee after about 14K miles on the current chain set to equalize wear on the front sprocket.Set has now done 16K and runs and looks like new.

I had one of these bikes and I have a vague recollection that I might have heard something similar from the chain during the 17,000kms of my ownership, albeit not as severe. My memory is hazy because I obviously didn't take it seriously. That is also a reason why I suggested dousing the chain with oil to see if the noise went away. On that bike I always ran the chain slack at the loosest end of the permitted slack and sometimes even looser than that.

My suggestion is that Your chain was too tight and also that there was not sufficient lube under the rollers. As such they were binding on their bushings and resisting rolling over the tips of the chain teeth and then clicking into the dip between the teeth. I am not suggesting that you are not lubing your chain but that many proprietary spray lubes don't get sufficiently under the rollers. That is why I put a line of good motor oil on the inside run of the chain after every spin and that oil gets well under the rollers while the chain is still hot and the bike lies up.

Just some thoughts.

Sorry, I thought I had updated this. It turns out that chain did have a tight spot, even though it wasn't visible

I was sceptical but a new chain and the noise is gone.

My 'Wee' chain suddenly gave up, from adjusting correctly (play correct with weight on at tightest point) one day, to stretching beyond belief and coming off 2 days later!! Weird!
