2 way radio/bike to bike intercom
« on: May 31, 2017, 12:22:32 »
Hello everyone,
I wonder if there's a product out there that any of you know about.

Basically I have the scala rider q1s for me and the other half which are fantastic. Unfortionately though they don't don't bike to bike comms. Does anyone know of a 2 way radio that I could use for bike to bike but connect it to my current helmet setup via Bluetooth. I understand I will need to put another like in and push a button on the handlebars to talk but don't want to try squizing more headphones into the helmet.

Cheers all

Wayne,

There are PMR Radio's with Bluetooth capability but they are expensive.

It may seem a backward step from your Scala but the BT Bluetooth Headsets do allow bike to bike.

My G4s do bike to bike and are backwards compatible with the q1s (I believe).

Thanks for the input chaps.

The bt comms look like mega value, it's just annoying after spending so much on the scala to ditch it. But this maybe the option if I do progress with the bike to bike idea.

Sena sr10 look like great bits of kit rusty nuts but just about too much on the pricey side for me.

Do you have any links to the G4s uk_vstrom650? Can't seem to find them

My local Aldi are now selling these
https://www.aldi.co.uk/maxtek-motorbike-bluetooth-headset/p/074815116411100
for £29.99, with their usual 3 year warranty you can't really go wrong. So much so I bought some, they work good enough for me, link to my satnav, and the wife has hers linked to her phone.
 Check you local stores.

As you say, it's a shame to splash out on a new bluetooth headset but it's probably the best option.
I mucked around with PMR two way radios and found it to be a pain in the arse. We switched to bluetooth headsets (I use the mega cheap ones on ebay) and although the volume is a little low (but only when you get above 70 mph) they work great and transmit for about a mile in open country. I don't bother switching them off when stopping for lunch breaks and the batteries last 10/12 hours.
I was wary of splashing out £100's which is why I went for the cheap one's but I am impressed with the way they work (We've had ours for nearly 4 years now) and maybe, just maybe, I'll buy the more expensive one's when these give up working.

It's a scala rider G4, although it's classed as obsolete by cardio now. That said, I did pair my G4 to whatever Bluetooth headset Josh uses (not a Scala) by pairing it as a mobile phone...

I'm pretty sure (some) scalas are backwards compatible so worth looking at manuals before buying as even the G4s are still expensive

It's my own fault really as when we were in the shoo buying the scala he was trying to push me into the next model up where they do talk bike to bike. But they were about £100 more and with me being tight I opted for the cheaper ones. (Still over £200 though.

Il stick with the scala for the min I think but then will go for the cheap eBay ones and hopefully be able to claw back a little bit on the scala kit when the time comes.

Do these things work if you wear earplugs? Thinking of dipping my toe in the water regarding bike comms and just wondering whether any of you blokes use them in conjunction with ear protection?

Andyonbass, I use my Sena for satnav directions, speed camera warnings and music with earplugs in a Shoei Neotec . The music is a little low, but I don't want it blasting my brains out while riding. Satnav is too loud at times, but can be turned down. Not tried it as an intercom, nobody wants to talk to me. Tried it as a phone once, worked fine, but too much distraction while riding. Mostly satnav and a bit of blues on long boring journeys.

I always use ear plugs and can hear the Sat Nav and the good lady no problem. I don't listen to music or use the phone. My own hearing is a little poor so I turn the volume up a bit, but it's not at full volume, Deb doesn't use ear plugs (makes her tinnitus worse) but also has poor hearing and has the volume low!
Scala rider Q1.......... still good at motorway speeds.  :thumb:

I also use earplugs in a Shoei Neotec and never have problems hearing my brother when he's on his bike.

Just be aware that the cheap ebay units may be a bit quiet. Mine are OK up to 70mph then anything above that and we're struggling.

These are the one's we use. They can only be used 1 to 1 at a time so don't get confused by anything that says you can connect to 6 riders - you can, but not at the same time! They do work for up to a mile in open country, when you're in urban areas it can get cut by buildings if you get too far ahead. They are good for the money but I can't compare them to anything else as these are the only one's we've had.

My scale q1's came with a mains adapter and USB cable. I don't use the mains adapter because I have a 12 'cigarette lighter'  type plug under the seat and I use one of these to plug both USB cables and both units in over night.

Wayne, if you splash out on an Autocom you can connect Sat Nav, Radio, Phone and Music all through one headset.

at the moment I'm going to stick with what I have. Its only because I finally have a mate that has a bike that I wouldn't mind talking too.  :haha: I haven't actually discussed it with him yet.

If he comes to the Wales trip would be good to chat on that journey.

USB charger came supplied with mine but any USB charger will do the trick.
