I have a calf problem too, insanely big calves. I tried on boots for ages in 6-7 big bike shops before finding these as the only non-lace ups that fit me from any make:

Had them 3 years and over 20,000 miles now, still going strong. Totally 100% waterproof. My only complaint would be they are not the tallest of boots, but then, if they were taller I probably couldn't wear them.

Alpinestars Scout! Bought from the nec in november. No problems, very comfortable and waterproof.
I too have got big calfs from stupid amounts of sport in my teens.

I myself have large calfs, so I chose the velcro closing ones. I used to own a sidi pair, but they were very tight. my current pair are weise. half the price I paid for my sidi boots, no zip just velcro and a strap to close so very adjustable, and waterproof enough I havnt got wet at all in, even in a downpour
I'm sane, honestly. . . I got a certificate to prove it!

Try Daytona Road Star GTX - double zip and double velcro adjusters.

Done about 200k in mine and still going strong!!

+1 for Alpinestars Scout boots, very comfy and that comes from a man who searched 5 hours for a comfy pair of sneakers! The good lady still uses that story to explain to people how full of nonsense I am about footwear :)

My requirements for boots are:

-high as possible
-waterproof membrane (ideally gtex)
-stitched sole
-full grain leather
- grippy sole
- comfy for walking

Looks to me that the altbergs and the scouts are the only two that fulfill those criteria.  J - is the leather on the scouts really proper (I.e. will take a good waxing) or is there a placky coat?

It's proper leather, quite smooth though (apparently they are polyurethane coated?), but I did Renapur them before I even used them the first time and it seems to absorb well. They come up high, this was one of my requirements this time around, proper shin protection. They are still wearing in, but they are getting there and I expect them to last me for years. 100% waterproof and definitely warmer than my old boots, haven't even used the Sealskinz with them once, not needed. I'm not a zip fan, I prefer velcro, but buckles are the compromise and after getting used to them I can get the boots on and off very quickly. It takes a few tries to find the right adjustment on the buckles, but they're easy to adjust and once you have it right then you just leave it like that.

Here's a quicky review of them:

Alpinestars scout all the way! Both myself and Chris used them on a 25k mile trip, couldn't fault them. They are absolutely waterproof apart from the holes in the top as Chris found out when he went fishing in them, fishing whith a sharpened stick I might add.  I would absolutely consider getting another pair if mine ever wear out. They are also comfy to walk in, I have walked miles in mine.

The Durban looks good but is expensive
