LED daytime running lights issue
« on: February 24, 2018, 11:42:43 »
Hello
Can anybody recommend any LED running lights from eBay, that use their bike regularly and in the wet weather,I have had a couple but, they all seem to fail due to moisture getting inside somehow.
I normally don't ride in the wet weather, or use a jet washer ,so it may be just condensation that's kill's them early.
Any recommendations ?

Denalli lights are top notch. But come with quite the price tag.

Me being a tight arse (with weird shaped engine bars and stupid built in indicators) I went do bike vis bullets. Not on ebay but google Bike Vis.

I've used really cheap little 5 LED strip lights from ebay on my bikes for years, mounting them under the spot lights on small alloy brackets.

Yes, they do eventually fail one LED after another, but really east to splice another one into the wiring loom.

Assuming the case itself is OK, the most likely ingress point for moisture (or rain) will be where the cable enters the unit. Buy a small tube of transparent silicon sealant (that smelly stuff they use on glass) and seal around the cable. I've bought some cheapo lights (and wiring harness) and I'm in the process of sealing all the points where water could get in to drip down. I hope it will be enough.
In my defence, she did leave me unsupervised.

Have a look at these, thought they looked quite reasonable and come with loom and switch as well. I'm waiting for mine to arrive from............you guessed it China! :GRR: maybe a while!

+1 for fleabay specials and then using sealant on ingress points , lasted three years so far, including three days of torrential motorway riding.

So which ones did you go for, the ones with the bulbous magnifying glass at the front?

As has been said, they look good value for the money, I too would be interested in what you think of them, in case my ones fail one day.

I used these and when one failed due to water ingress I removed all the insides, drilled a hole in the centre and fitted it with a £1 led and it worked for two and a half years. I sold the bike with it still OK  :thumb:

As soon as they arrive (work permitting) I'll get them wired up and give you a demo, some pics etc. Any gaps or spaces though I do intend to splash a bit of clear silicon in there to prevent any unnecessary water ingress as mentioned in previous posts. Want them to last! :thumb:

I had these  same R-1200gs lights fitted to my Versys 1000 when we went up to the highlands and they got very wet and still worked fine.

I also have them fitted to my NC750x which is used all year round and I find them a very good source of light when on country roads which I need due to the poor LED headlight.

Just a follow up on the LED auxiliary lights. Got them fitted today, took a couple of weeks to arrive, all in all I’m very pleased with them. Really bright with a horizontal quite wide beam. Some pics below.

They do look very good value for the money. Will be good to get your thoughts as to what they're like at night time. I've saved them to my watch list in ebay, just in case my ones die one day.

Same here, the mounting hardware looks good but I'm a little disappointed by the beam pattern. They seem a bit too focused. I was expecting more spread, like fog lights.

No just a simple on/off switch mounted on handle bar. Yeah the beam pattern looks straight against the wall/door but it should spread across the floor? I’ll take a pic later with just spots on see what pattern is like with door open  :thumb:

Just poked the wees nose out the door, don’t want her to get wet! Anyway that’s the beam pattern, shadow to left is door jamb and middle one is from front wheel. I’m pleased with em.
