Soon to be new owner
« on: September 08, 2011, 13:33:01 »
Hi blokes.

Looks like I should pick a up 2010 DL650 with just over 2000 miles on the clock towards the end of next week. So.....is there anything that I should immediately look for. Being an ex- kwak ZRX owner, with that, I was told that the radiator grommet had to come out to avoid the rad leaking after a few thousand miles, Kawasaki's habit of putting no grease in the swingarm Proved to be less than 'no' actually) etc etc
Anything like this that need to be noted on the DL650. Cheers in advance...I hope

Congratulations on a great choice of bike. I've had mine 9 months now and love it. Nothing has gone wrong, no issues that I considered serious or niggles that annoy me. They can be susceptible to corrosion so the first thing I fitted was a mudguard extenda. My bike has the Suzuki skid/bash plate and I've found that this along with the mudguard extenda keeps loads of crap off the front end of the bike and protects all the vulnerable areas. I'd recommend those 2 mods and budget permitting I'd wack on a cenrestand as well. Other than that its a cracking bit of kit so get out there and enjoy it!

The only common problem I have heard of is with the electrical connector that is behind the radiator that can give a bad connection as the bike ages and result in the headlights not working, so if you are ever working on that area of the bike give it a clean and a dose of wd40.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

it might be getting your MRA screen retailer set up as a speed dial ?
It's pronounced 'twenty-one-twelve'

Ah yes... as the good folk above have pointed out the standard screen set up can induce 'vision problems' and 'rough air issues' above a certain speed (70mph in my experience). I cured it with a Madstad bracket and kept the standard screen. Others have used different screens and/or Madstads..
Other than that its a great bike  :thumb:

Congratulations !  No real problems with the 650's. Nothing much to add to what's already been said..You don't say what model you have, but with only 2000 miles I, too, suggest make your first mod the £17 (approx) front mudguard extender, probably screwed/bolted on (as opposed to glueing - mine fell off after 40 miles or so!) saves crudding and premature rusting of Your nuts and precious parts!
If you get buffeting (some do, some don't) try the cheapest mod first, which is washers to tilt the screen back (plenty stuff on this forum about that and related mods). Just fill er up and have fun! :thumb:

Thanks for the advice and welcomes. Its a black/grey K7 XP (sorry its a 2008). The wind buffeting will be interesting as I'm only 5' 6" tall so we will see. Need to get it right quick as one of its first runs could be to the Vendee region of France.
Will be back, I would of thought, in a week with loads of questions. Thanks again.  :thumb:
