language choices in SMF
« on: July 14, 2020, 13:31:59 »
I noticed in my first post (to introductions) that my gender neutral greeting "Hi blokes" (which will probably be translated by the dumb software here) was turned into the much less neutral "Hello Blokes" - a rather laddish and inappropriate greeting in my view. (OK, I'm an old fogey, but language matters.)

I note that ths site is built using SMF so I took a look at the simpleminds site and the documentation for SMF itself. That documentation suggests that there are plenty of ways of adding to or modifying language themes, and indeed strings within themes, so someone, somewhere, has taken the concious decision either to make this rather annoying autotranslation or to allow a possibly default autotranslation to remain.

Can one of the mods please explain why?

Cheers

Your posts were turned into English English, from American English. Accept it and have fun with it. Search the forum for "filter" and you'll find more than oil and air....

It had little to do with the dumb software, more to do with the English admin that has a problem with Americanisms in the English language.

It had little to do with the dumb software, more to do with the English admin that has a problem with Americanisms in the English language.

Ahem - "English admin "who" has a problem...."

Pedantry aside, I think the responses to my post illustrate quite well the problem with the decision. I have no problem with modern colloquial English idioms such as "H.I. G.u.y.s" which is probably used fairly widely by the readership here, but I do have a problem with "Hello Blokes", which I doubt very many people would use. "Hello chaps" possibly, but not "Hello Blokes".

But if that is the way the forum works, so be it. Though pain in the Donkey it most certainly is.

Chaps? What ho Binky, shall we give Jerry a bloody nose today old bean? Tally ho and all that...

Nah, just as bad as the Yankified nonsense the yoofs of today want to spout. Why not give it more than a day & 5 posts to see how you get on with the setup?

I don't see a problem, it avoids Americanisms and it is often very funny, particularly when people try to over analyse it  :thumb:

Arse is permitted, by the way. A-s-s, not , as you've noticed. That can work the other way, too We've all bumped up against the filter at one time or another. We had someone post about a water arse once. He meant a water b-u-t-t.  lol
