650 De-cat
« on: October 29, 2015, 15:33:03 »
Well, it was only a matter of time....

One standard glee system:

Chippy, choppy with the grinder:

Drill, bang, drill, hammer, drill....

Now away being welded up, lets see if it makes the glee sound like a motorbike :)

Excellent, be interested to see how this turns out. Could be tricky putting that together with the double skin.

That's a lot of work just to help pollute the atmosphere and irritate the Neighbours. Americans just fire guns on a regular basis to endanger lives and make noise.

And stay off my lawn. :old:

Unlike those who fit a replacement system then (of which you never seem to pass comment)....

It's not that much work or expense, it won't be loud enough to annoy the neighbours but (hopefully) pleasant enough to satisfy me.

I'll stop polluting when I stop riding, oh and driving, oh and eating, buying products, going on holiday blah blah. Guess I better scrap my dirty polluting carburated classic bikes, I'll have a word with the neighbour too as he regularly uses his lovely (re polluting) old classic cars
I don't see cats/egr/dpfs etc fitted to NASA rockets or aircraft, what about the worlds shipping belching black shit out day & night....
My work a few years ago saw me burning literally hundreds of gallons of diesel a day in rather basic diesels, still do a bit of it now.
The whole of our modern lifestyle is polluting.

Americans don't just fire guns, they also drive round in f***ing big auto v8s. that's OK then.

I regard your input with high regard, not this time.

I don't like louder than stock replacement systems without cats either, and for the same reasons. I want to see an advantage when replacing something. Losing weight is about the only reason I can think of. Making more noise and pollution strikes me as selfish and lacking regard for others. Nothing turns the general public against motorcycles more than noise.

Big SUVs, and other demonstrations of an FU attitude  also bother me. Sorry but you picked directly on a sore spot with me.

Part of riding a motorcycle is a bit of FU to society and regiment, it's what sets bikers apart and has created our culture and spirit. If we didn't stick together and say FU to governments and such, because we like living that little closer to the edge, our beloved motorcycle would have been long since banned and we would be confined to 4 wheeled bubbles of hell!

Meanwhile, and deliberately sidestepping any possible disputes.

Welding is done (£20), just needs a blob of vht

And fitted:

The weld is barely noticeable when on the bike, the flash picks up the painted area more than it really is, excuse the grubby oily paw prints!

Initial start up it's marginally louder than stock, but a deeper 'thrum' - quieter than road legal aftermarket which is what I was after.
I'll report back after a decent run.

Top job. Now you have the bug, it will only be a matter of time before you "need" to gut the end can.

I'm doing Rochdale Hornet's later this year. :)
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

I won't get the urge to go gutting the can as I don't like loud exhausts and unless the gutting is done pretty well they can sound a bit crap, all IMHO of course :)

I did the same to my wee except I removed the entire contents of the can. Did it about 6 years ago and don't regret it for a second. As a daily commuter I like to be heard and it achieves that without being too loud and cost a fraction of the price of a replacement exhaust.

Still no chance for a trial runout, hopefully this week!

Too quiet a can and you get pedestrians stepping out thinking its clear- So some noise is a safety feature. Also, less weight=better fuel consumption.
Personally, as a commuter and shift worker I don't think I'll follow suit. I prefer the stealth mode!

First quick run out.
It's still without doubt a very quiet subdued system, just a slightly deeper 'thrum' to the engine note when trickling through town or when you open it up, it's still inaudible at cruising speed which is how I like it.
It's a while since I last rode the bike, so no back to back comparison but initially no performance change is noted - until I went for an overtake when punch/grunt did 'feel' to be inproved above 5k, obviously quite subjective.....

Overall, I was expecting a little more so the jury is still out.

I've seen a cutaway of the stock end-can and there are several internal pipes that route the exhaust back and forth a couple times before finally exiting; that's where your noise baffling is.

I personally think every single vehicle, car and motorcycle, should be a lot louder; not open-pipe-harley loud, but I'll enjoy internal combustion while I can, and then embrace the Tie-Fighter whine of my inevitable electric bike when I get one.

I will say this - I wish Suzuki had put the cat somewhere so I could've retained it when I swapped in my Scorpion can. I'd prefer to pollute less if I can, but in this instance I'll blame the EU for enforcing unwanted noise regs along with necessary pollution controls.

Just my opinion though :)
