Will XT spoked wheels fit a 2007 wee?
« on: August 09, 2019, 14:01:20 »
Hello Y'all,

Hope everyone is well.

Slightly long story, but was hoping next year would be the year to change the bike, however it looks like the daughters uni plans are going to put a spanner in those works!

So I wanted to maybe do a bit of as I go customising on the Strom for a bit of excitement, make it feel a bit different.

I have searched and searched and I am struggling to find the answer, does anybody know if you can fit the spoked XT wheels onto the older models, and if any mods are required?

I don't want to pay £2000-2500 for after market ones, but I am hoping I could pick some up second hand/it looks like it would be less than £1000 to get a new set via Robinsons/Fowlers.

Would be interested to hear if anyone else has looked into/has any experience of this?

Thanks a lot,

Adam

Adam,

I would consider spoked wheels a downgrade. They are just a ball ache  :bawl:

Thanks FR, is "but they look cool" an acceptable response  lol
I hate the look of the 3 spoke OEM's
That's really interesting though, in what way would you consider them a downgrade? I assumed they would be lighter and more robust?

The finish will evaporate in front of your eyes unless you are going to spend hours and hours with a toothbrush and ACF-50. There is also the additional maintenance of checking spoke tension etc.

There is almost no difference in weight between the 2019 spoked wheel and the 2019 cast wheels which in my opinion look very nice. Spoked wheels are a PITA the clean and its a losing battle all the way with Suzuki finish.
Remove the tyres and bearings and have them powder coated "burnished copper".
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Didn't realise they were additional maintenance I have to say! Powder coating was another option so I'll look into that, thanks for the input :thumb:

Speedo drive is picked up off the front wheel on the K7, not on the later (new) models.

I agree with Brockett that the latest multi spoke cast wheels are much nicer - almost as good to look at as proper spokes but with all the other benefits of cast. I didn't like the old 3 spoke wheels, which is mainly why I ended up with an XT Glee (which I foolishly sold!). Best thing you could do is to see whether there is a forum member near you with a newish bike who might let you try their wheels for size - for a couple of beers. You might even find a dealer who will try them for fit, on the promise of a potential purchase of a pair of new wheels! Personally, if they do fit, I'd go for the new cast wheels.

If you do decide to go for the spoked rims, as DesertStrom pointed out, give thought on how you will get the speedo to work. Perhaps a mod setup similar to that of the L2 Glee, ie signal pickup off the counter sprocket, but that wouldn't that involve a mod to the sprocket cover? Maybe off the ABS ring? The other method would be the digital route, like either a GPS or an after-market setup.
