Clutch Nightmare
« Reply #8621 on: October 07, 2018, 16:38:19 »
Decided to take off front sprocket cover to clean behind and get better access for back of engine cleaning.

As I slowly pulled clutch slave off - damm thing dissasembled itself, and poured dot 4 all over the floor.  Just spent the last 2 hours re-assembling and re-bleeding.

Be really careful pulling the slave off the pushrod!!
If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

Cleaned, greased, ready for another 600 mile week commute  :)

I also touched up the radiator & oil cooler so that I could fit some new Beowulf guards, got to love winning stuff on eBay

Yeah it can get pretty mucky in there porter - All shiny now.
Interesting point of point of note for those with a 17/18 DL1K....

The dust seals for the 17/18 are different to the 14-16's. Which look just like my sv's. They have a a deep skirt on them which covers more of the piston.

The slave assy looks the same. Maybe an upgrade for 14-16 owners? The SV's are notorious for getting crap in there and the pushrod + seal issues that follow - this dust seal looks like it provides better protection.

Have ordered one for the sv too. :)

Edited to add - just looked at the 02-10 DL's as well this might fit them too?

I cut a McDonalds milk shake straw down to cover the push rod so that it stops crud getting into the seal.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

TLP - Top TIP!!!!!  picked up a couple of straws today.

On further digging, I'm now thinking the 17/18 cases may have been machined to accept this new dust seal. Our dear cousins further east have a thread on this very issue.

http://v-strom.ru/forum/index.php?topic=6502.0

On page 2 you'll see what I mean. the right hand part of that casting which accepts the bolt is machined flat on the top of mine. Here they show the old version which looks like the SV/TL. My web translator was pretty crap - but seems there's some debate there. Some folks with older machines say it fits OK, some say it does not. At least - that's how I read it.

I'll try fitting the new one to my 04SV anyway when it arrives to find out.

The last two pictures on page one are a different seal than the one I fitted last week on my 14veek, the pictured seal has a longer shoulder for the pushrod than the one Suzuki sold me.
On a different note the Suzuki seal is made by Koyo japan and costs 17 quid, I seen one one ebay for a fiver, ordered it and it too is made by koyo, 12 quid for a Suzuki plastic bag!

The corporate quick buck eh?

The 14-16 seems to have the same as the sv seal. Which wasn't the greatest to be honest. I've replaced the lot on the sv, pushrod, pushrod seal, new clutch slave, cover everything and it still gets really crappy in there.

Yours (and the SV's) looked like this..

https://www.cmsnl.com/Suzuki-sv1000-2005-k5-usa-e03_model34931/cover-dust_2316602f20/

Mine looked pretty clean in there for 5000 miles now, so looks like Suzuki knew about the problem.

Whether it fits and works better is tbd, I guess we'll both learn soon enough.

But I'm thinking it would be fairly easy to dremel/file down the casing to accept it if it didn't. (That is of course of the slaves are the same, which looking at both in the garage side by side they do seem to be - the part numbers are different on those links because the seal come with it and that's now a different part no)

If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

Perhaps I should have added that I did this to my Cagiva which is fitted with the much, much earlier TL1000 doorstop. I fitted the later SV seal and machined  (  lol ) the retainer to fit. For machined read dremel. I also fitted a new push-rod and like you Porter the Koyo ebay seal.

I did an oil and filter change, changed all brake & clutch fluid and had engine sprocket cover off to check sprocket for wear. Still a bit of life left in it. Greased all levers & pivots and will check valve clearances, throttle bodies etc.. when manual arrives.

Are you keeping the vstrom then? Or just till the bm arrives.  I must look at my valve clearances this winter. They where OK at 15k but another 10k on them now

Scottoiler, new USB socket with fancy magnetic switch and another oil and filter change.  Oh and stopped a minor oil leak from the engine cases.

It was a good day

Did the bike need any modification to fit them and who supplied them? I have the same bike and might consider doing the same. Thanks.

. . . . . . . . and will check valve clearances, throttle bodies etc.. when manual arrives.

Seeing as we're nearly neighbours, any chance you could fire some front suspension info to me, once you've got Your mits on the manual  :lala:. Looking to change the forks oil and lube up the headbearings this winter . . . . . . . and if I can get my hands on the special socket for the swingarm pivot bolt, I'll give those bearings a new bed of grease to run in.
