odd metallic rattle at 5000rpm
« on: July 30, 2020, 09:35:21 »
OK
I've had my wee 10 years now n just done a main service down to valve clearances
all within tolerance so just reassembled
but when I started her up again I've got a weird high frequency metallic rattle on the overrun at about 5k rpm
dissassembled it all again and taken everything I can think of off, and  had several othe mechanics I know have a look
none of us can isolate the noise
stand at rear and it sounds like its coming from the rear take bodywork off and stick your head at front and it sounds like its coming from rad area
but have failed completely to isolate it
even took rear subframe off,
all bolts checked and tightened
anyone got any ideas at all?
its an 07 Wee
the rattle is like a thin metal on thin metal resonance
like I would expect from a rad guard rattling or something similar, not an engine rattle
had whole exhaust system off inc O2 sensor
nothing
doesn't sound terminal or dangerous, its just bloody annoying and even more so because I can't find it
any ideas grateful :-)

Might be the heart and soul of the bike trembling with fear at the thought of you riding it again.  lol

If you have a Givi crash bar installed, check for a loose or broken welded joint. The latest pix that I can find of the GiVi bar installation, shows each side assembly as a single unit. Basically an upper section either welded or bolted to a lower section. https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/quality-of-givi-crash-guards-just-received-for-DL650.365794/

Do you by any chance have a pair of these fitted? Same symptoms for me. Fitted on engine bars, all brackets tight, but..... The lamp housing and the little cast block that fits in the saddle are two separate pieces, connected by a slightly over long screw. They came loose and rattled as you describe. Took me ages to find it.

evening all :)
earplugs?
never :)
eh?

no driving lights fitted so that's not it :)
as to loose anything
its been stripped and everything checked 4 times now lol
even had subframe off, gone round and round till I'm dizzy lol
taken all bodywork and rack support bars and bash plate off, even had exhaust off and O2 sensor out

I think it's just pissed off because I put the laverda back on the road but it needs to get over it :)

Morning,

Sorry I'm a bit new to all of this. But when you say over run, do you mean when you rev up and then close the throttle?

Could it be a problem with the timing chain tensoiners? Causing the timing chain to whip on something when the tension changes from power on to power off, and about 5k rpm its fast enough to be audible? or whip enough to hit something.

I'm not much of a bike mechanic, and I have zero experience with the V Strom engines (got my first one 6 days ago and I haven't even check the oil, let alone put a spanner to it), but I'd have thought if you take the cam cover off, any rubbing / wear on the outside of the timing chain should be pretty obvious, not sure how you would check the inside.

I would start the service and valves again. Do everything as you did before, obviously not changing oil, filters or anything else but going through the motion. Did you change the air filter? Maybe an area to look at. If one of your friends will lend you his eyes while you go through the job again, including valves, you are bound to find the cause of the alarming noise which, I for one would not be able to live with.

If that fails, burn the bike and claim the insurance   :thumb:

Sounds like a job for a "Mechanics Stethoscope" Or of course the Yorkshire version a long screwdriver held to the ear :)

I bought one of those stethoscopes for less than you'd pay for a decent screwdriver and they do work better. Just don't thump the end on anything whilst it's in your ears as that really gets your attention... Note to Suzanne Vega: it's not just blood making noise that gives you a ringing in your ears!

The mrs would not be amused if she found me in the garage with her stethoscope.
She does regularly find me there after stealing her dressings and micropore tape when I need to properly replace the tissue and duct tape dressing.

Got an alternative exhaust to try, to eliminate internal rattling?

tried 2 different cans and got my friendly mot man to go over it again and he's having bad dreams since,  its not an internal engine noise, it really does just sound like a loose washer or something
air filter was cleaned but been checked twice since, tank bolts all checked too
my yorkshire stethoscope has been well used all over
on stromtroopers there's loads of similar comments, none with an actual solution
one bloke decided to thrash the nuts off it n said after 30 miles it had stopped, but any of you that know me know I've already done that :) :)
off to Wales friday so its going back together today and I'm confident It'll be fine but ill be glad when I find the bloody thing
if not everythings coming off again and I might actually turn it into the vstrom light I've always wanted lol
hope you're all well
have fun

I know I made a piss taking comment earlier in this thread but I've been following in hope you find a solution as I know personally the frustration of an annoying rattle.. :dl_smiley_banghead:

I've been thinking about the job you did and what would need to be removed and the first thing that comes to mind that would resonate as you described is the tank Mount at the front, now I know you said you've checked it but unless it's proper tight the bracket could resonate as there isn't any rubber mountings at that point .

Just my thoughts , could be wrong ..

its fine mate I've got thick skin lol
but yep, tank mount been checked and rechecked, then checked again, twice lol
by the time it was back together today I was too knackered to get it out and go for a run but ill see again tomorow, not expecting much because neither I nor mot man found anything, but I guess there's a remote chance I tightened something that been missed previously
we will see

Just an idea... if I read the symtoms (translated from English into German) and look at this region of the machine, could it be a loose magnet in the alternator?
