Dunlop Mixtour Trail mini review
« on: June 20, 2025, 16:03:40 »
So, to set the scene, these tyres are one of the O/E options on Honda 750 Transalp's. Note - transalp's spoked wheels are not air tight and they run inner tubes. The tyres are surprisingly quiet, given the 'blocky' off-road look of the tread pattern. Warm up is quite quick, but make sure they do warm up, as grip can be a bit iffy when you've parked up for a while. Side grip, front and rear, is very good and you will be doing very well to run out of grip while cornering. Under very hard acceleration you can get the rear to squirm a bit but I've never had it let go on me. The braking performance is very good and I've yet to operate the tranny's ABS in any conditions. Corner entry is very smooth and they hold a line perfectly, easily as well as a full on road tyre. Direction changes are equally smooth and on the slightly positive side, meaning left/right flicks are a pleasure - even with a 21" front wheel. Straight line stability is very good until the rear starts to square off a bit, at that point a bit of instability starts to creep in but only at naughty speeds. The only fly in the ointment seems to be durability, I only managed 3,544 miles out of the original rear tyre. It was down to 2.2mm in the centre and had started to square off, affecting stability and turn in. The front tyre is like new and hardly has any wear? That's the only reason I've gone with another rear.

If you want a chunky looking tyre that has masses of grip then this could be for you. If you want to get a bit of mileage out of your tyres I would look elsewhere...
It's pronounced 'twenty-one-twelve'

Good review  :thumb:. I would take the rear tyre down to the legal minimum in the summer with dry roads as we have had. My Tourance is just above 1mm down the middle at the moment and scrubbed right to the edges but still holding the road like glue.

I have a set of road tyres in my storage container ready to go on but the front still has plenty of tread left on it and as the new tyres are a mismatch with Tourance it wouldn't be legal (so a tyre fitter told me) to fit the new rear I have with the one already on the front so I'll hold off until the rubber is down to absolute minimum. I don't like doing that but I had to maximise tyre life when I was a youngster with only cash for petrol so I'm well used to riding a tyre down to the minimum 1mm.  :auto-dirtbike: :thumb:

It will be interesting to see if you get more miles with this one , even with lower gearing , being the same but not OE , if you see what I mean.
The std Bridgestone A41 front as supplied on my new 650 had only a few mm of tread compared to the usual one . I don't remember the mileage, less than 5k ?, but it was done in quick. The manufacturers cutting costs

I wouldn't worry too much about the O.E tyre 2112, I'm with you in changing at around the 2mm depth. A single small contact patch doesn't take much to be less effective when the tread has gone.

It is not illegal to mix tyre brands, only crossply and radial.

To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.
