I bought a new tent just before my accident but it's way too big to manage one handed. Someone on farcebook recommended a Vaude Hogan 2 as a possibility for one handed erection (quiet in the cheap seats) and was wondering if anyone has first hand experience?

I find it hard to believe you didn't put that bit about one handed erections in to gain a place in a certain quotes museum :grin:

They are a bit bulky, packed, and not very light but OK in a car or on the back of a bike (less width than the panniers). When it dries up a bit outside I could experiment, and try and put it up one-handed?
Its not much cop for carting about if you're backpacking, though.

Cheers Dave - I was after a relatively light one because I'm too tight to buy a separate tent for backpacking as well as bike camping. That would be far two tents for me (thank you, thank you, here all week, try the veal)

Agree about weight of Khyams. Also, the doorway is very very low, a bit of a pain when it's wet. I've had two over the years, quality has really suffered. The groundsheet is pathetically thin and fragile so you end up getting the sps under-groundsheet sheet. More weight, more bulk. Absolute piece of piss to put up, not much fun to get back into the bag, especially one-handed. Shame the old inflatable igloos disappeared, and Karsteins are obscenely expensive. If it's only occasionally light use have you considered the "pop up" type spring hoop fame job?

I did, but I wanted something that would be comfortable in British weather, I get very cold at night and the last time I slept in a pop up tent it was a miserable experience. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

I just got a Coleman Tatra 2. Its not a pop up tent but its very quick and easy to erect on your own. One of the reasons I went for this tent is that it packs up quite small and fits in my top box. To keep the base in good condition I will probably use a cheap ground sheet.

The tent I am after next is the 'Wildcountry Zephyros 3 living' as it's about 6foot tall, good spec, and only 4.2kg packed. Plenty of space, but maybe still too heavy? It's always a trade-off :eusa-doh:

A lighter tent, similar in design to the Khyam easy-up tents are by Slumit. They are supposed to be equal or better quality, are British (!) (I think) and on sale at the moment. I wanted one when I got my Khyam, but they has suspended business at the time.

That slumit is a seriously nice bit of kit, Dave, I'm tempted... only thing is whether I could pull the top bit apart with just one hand. If I had enough of my bad arm to thread through and push down I could probably do it... but I don't.
It is only 70 quid though, I suppose I could get one and if I can't do it I could sell it on :/

I think the main problem isn't getting the tent up, it's getting the bugger down and packed. Everybody knows you need a degree in Origami and the patience of a saint to get a tent back into the bag. You usually need three hands as well.

Glastonbury philosophy: Cheap tent, take a dump in it las thing before leaving, leave it for the site clearance brigade. No black belt at Origami required. Not so popular with the Camping & Caravanning Site owners, oddly enough.
