Iconic V-Strom for Sale (SOLD)
« on: June 01, 2015, 18:07:47 »
Well, I know, I'm bigging it up a bit, but I'm sure I can argue the point somewhat. My K5 Wee is up for sale as I'm in the process of buying a new Yamaha MT-09 Tracer and I'm not going to be using the Strom, neither do I have enough space to keep it.

Most members will know that this is a very high mileage bike with a well documented history on this forum and that it's been completely taken apart (except the engine), refurbished throughout and put back together. This entailed several new/replacement parts (radiator being one), lots of powder coating (frame, wheels, forks lowers, swingarm, sub frame and various other bits) as well as professional rechroming of the fork stanchions. The annoying alarm was also removed and the main wiring loom as replaced. The whole thing cost me more than £1000 to do and there's a long thread that shows lots of pictures of the work (it's a good read too), see my signature for the link.

In September last year I went to Morocco with Locky for an great adventure. I had a fall at about 40mph there and damaged both sides of the bike. Tank panels, front cowl, engine bars along with hand guards and mirrors are scratched up/cracked. I have replacement parts for it all except the hand guards and an indicator, but I haven't fitted it yet. The bike was parked up when we got back and hasn't been ridden since, but the battery has been kept on charge and, as always, she'll fire up on the button. She also started using some oil on the way back through Spain. I'm quite certain this is because the valve stem seals had gone hard in the 9 months the bike was in bits to get refurbished. I'll do a compression test to make sure it's not rings. These seals are about £3 each and there's 8 of them, not a train smash, just takes time to do the work.

It currently has a set of TKC80 tyres on, they look the business and they have a decent amount of life left in them.

I know breaking it and selling the bits will get me lots more, but I want a quick sale as I need the space. £1200 (or nearest cash offer) gets you the bike (without the Givi plate, pannier rails or panniers you see in some pictures.)

It's not a perfect condition bike, but it's got a lot of nice bits that's might be worth the money. If you're enterprising you could probably buy it to break it and make some money.

PM me if you're interested or you want to make an offer.

=============================================

Open to reasonable offers on anything.

Bits that have been sold off already:
- Black headlight surround fairing
- Handle bars
- Centre stand
- Givi Monokey plate + mounting brackets
- Radiator cover
- Oil cooler cover
- Hyperpro rear shock spring
- black Bagster tank cover
- fork brace
- front brake rotors
- Madstad
- bash plate

Things with dibs on, but sale not agreed (call dibs if you want to be next in line!)
- side stand

Noteworthy other items still available (offers welcome, but I'll larf at you if it's too silly):
(This isn't an exhaustive list by a long stretch)
- [s:2zdsho8n]rechromed front forks stanchions[/s:2zdsho8n] (stanchions bent in Morocco fall)
- satin black powder coated front fork lowers
- front fork internals and caps
- front axle
- triple clamps/yolks (powder coated satin black)
- GPR exhaust + extra custom baffle
- Black Bagster Cross'R tank bag with rain cover (requires Bagster tank cover/universal harness to mount)
- Front tank side panels (both)  <-- will also sell separate
- Cymarc Front brake reservoir cover
- Wide foot pegs (modified not to touch frame when they fold up)
- Front brake calipers and SV racing brackets (including pads and mounting bolts)
- tinted sports screen
- Krauser 40 litre panniers + satin black powder coated rails (these rails are like crash bars for the rear)
- satin black powder coated rear alloy luggage rack
- gloss black powder coated wheels (currently with half worn TKC80 tyres on, but plan on taking them off and selling them separately)
- Yacugar uprated fork springs
- custom brake hoses, 2 individual front + the rear
- a lovely satin black powder coated frame (including V5C), sub frame, triple clamps, engine mounts, headlight frame and swingarm (new bearings in headstock and swingarm) All this powder coated stuff is drooltastic and I would love to see the whole rolling chassis sold as one, but I know it's unlikely. Anyone wanting that will get preference over all individual buyers, don't delay.
- rear side panels (blue)
- speedo/rev console
- Vee seat with tiny tears/marks, completely useable
- Gel seat with tear
- whole engine (perfect running condition other than using a lot more oil than it should, I suspect valve stem seals as there's no loss of power, but I will confirm with a test. OPEN TO ANY OFFERS. ~110k miles on it and has never been opened other than to set valves.)
- throttle bodies
- practically new throttle cable (only fits these old single spark plug Wees)
- practically new clutch cable
- good condition 2nd hand radiator (like hen's teeth these)
- ECU
- excellent condition wiring loom, willing to sell looms separate
- headlight unit with small mark in one corner out of the way, not a problem, will pass MOT (photo on request)
- stock chain guard bought as replacement, like new

At that price it's an incredible bargain considering the time, effort and new parts you put into the rebuild!

But Juv without a Strom, that's the end of an era.......

Would anyone want any bits off it if I decide to break it?

I think the Vee shock is different, slightly longer if I recall correctly. Best check, I'm sure there was a post with that info somewhere on here.

Question.
What colour is your Strom, and what sort of condition are the right and left tank panels in.

It's blue, the ones on the bike are scratched up badly, but I have 2 replacement panels in the shed that's in excellent condition. See the link in my signature for pictures on the exact blue.

Hi, my one is Candy Grand Blue, paint code YC2, your bike looks the same, but difficult to tell, I think mine is a K6, but registered in 2007.
If they are very nice, give a clue on cost including posting down to East Sussex

Got one of those in near perfect condition, also in the shed as a spare that I was going to put on. I paid £100 for it, that's much cheaper than you'd get one from a dealer and they are pretty scarce on eBay and the like. I'd like to recover my costs on it.

I've had enough interest to break it, I think. Those that has showed interest (whether in the thread or via PM), I will get back to you soon. If anyone else wants anything, let me know. I am in Rugby and though I prefer that you collect I can post, but usually only on weekends.

Decided against selling it as a complete bike then?
Best way to maximise your return.

I remember reading an article that if you bought a brand new bike and immediately broke it (I guess assuming you sell the parts for what the dealers charge) the sum of the parts would be greater than the cost of the bike. Be interesting to know if it worked in practice.

I know of one Honda specialist that did exactly that with a grey import Fireblade in the '90s. Brand new, opened the crate and took it to bits.
