Out towards Cambridge today and ended up at Shudy Camps ( middle of nowhere ) ...pic of the church there.
Odd name , could google it, but sometimes like to think about it not knowing , old school
The birth place of Pontins in 1879 is my present favourite guess .....
Stopped for a piss and a snack/glug just outside Shudy at what I thought was a farm lane, nice and quiet .
Turns out to be Homers ( DOH ) Lane and a public byway....Hmmmm.
The first bit looked dodgy so hummed and harred while I ate.
FeckIt...got better as I made my way up the mile or two it lasted..again I would have been quicker on the gasgas E bike but ..whatever.
A solid 300 miles today, though the Sat Nav blew a fuse and tried to take me up a road that no longer exists, it had been blocked off and permanantly dug up ...wtf.

I expect lots of great rides were had today given the fantastic weather. Headed down the west coast of Cumbria before venturing over the Hardknott Pass again, this time nice and empty… well until I got over the other side and proceeded to queue. Decided the lakes are best ridden in the evenings when tourists have headed home. I know I’ve said that before but I never learn. Blasted home to be handed a shovel and told to finish the gardening before the weather turns tomorrow. Oh well, had a few hours of bliss  :icon_wink:

A quick run out today while the sun was shining. Took the back lanes from Derby to & back from Darley Moor, Ashbourne for a coffee & a piece of cake. Managed just under 50 miles twisting & turning on the lanes for what could have been less than a 30 mile return journey.
Left home around 12.30 when the sun had appeared & the temperature was well into double figures.
There was a cycle race happening on the track while we were there.
A few photos to prove it happened.  :)

Still running in, so a gentle run tonight on some of the local country roads, round by Hermitage Castle, not the best picture of the castle as the main part of it is hidden from this angle.

Also trying my latest screen variation / adjustment, Givi Airflow with an AliExpress Vario type deflector on top. It is definately an improvement over the Givi on it's own, need to try it out at a motorway speeds, it looks a bit over the top though..

Finally rode it instead of tinkering with it.
Waited until late afternoon for the crowds to subside and then popped out to Lud's Church for a stroll. It's up a decent sized hill so we figured we'd earned some chips so off down to Matlock. Pleasantly quiet at 8pm so a quick mini fish special and a brew before the twilight cruise up the A6 and home.

Nigel S, I live just 10 minutes from Shudy Camps.
The roads from Gt Dunmow to Finchingfield and beyond are so popular with bikers. We hear roaring bikes all throughout each weekend during the summer.

 MisterDavey,
It is a lovely area, my first visit to Shudy Camps. The main roads around there were crammed with bikes, I try to avoid the groups and over popular roads, so I cut cross country and found some lovely quiet curvy roads that lead me there...nice. No average speed cameras or caravans either.. Homer Lane was a one off find, thankfully we have had little rain, I would not try it when wet using Road6s...

Some nice pics and rides there chaps!!  I took the opportunity to consider spending even more money by test riding a mates Arai Tour-x4 that he wants to sell as he's upgraded (he's worse than me for buying stuff :))  Never ridden in an Arai before and I have to say it fit very well and I was very impressed that it's much smaller overall, lighter and very much less turbulent (even with peak) than my Nexx.  I just happened to end up at my favourite beer garden to gather my thoughts  :obscene-drinkingchug:

The Gradbach Mill car park is free but quite small, probably less than 20 places. If you aim for mid week or early evening then it's only about 20 to 30mins walk each way and the crowds have subsided. Overflow parking is £5 but we got the bikes in easily at 5ish even on Easter Sunday.

I haven't been out, but grabbed an hour to fit the SW-Motech crash bars. Or, to be really honest, my SW-Motech light mounts....
Those two small bolts where the bars meet in the middle were so fiddly, and the most frustrating part of a very simple task.

No riding today as I helped my eldest son landscape his model railway. So, while glue was drying I gave the bike a quick clean, dried off then drenched in ACF50 to keep protected till autumn. Started the bike again to burn off the excess and forgot how much smoke it makes. Oops, still the bike looks very clean now so my OCD is happy!

I recently put a Nitron shock on the 2022 650. It's made a big difference to the handling. Suspension is always the big thing for me on a bike.
On the rainy bank holiday, I dropped in a pair of used Ohlins linear fork springs. They aren't quite right for me - they are an 8.0 and I think I need a 9.0 of 9.5. They are my usual 'strength'.
Anyway, they were cheap enough to be worth a punt.
I did a real quick job - fitted them without changing the oil, as I had none in stock. The oe stuff was still pink (looks like ATF).
Normally, I'd do a proper job - this was a temporary trial.
Went out today and did a brief 40 miles. Wow, what a difference. It's like being on a different bike.
The turn in is quicker, holds a line, doesn't run wide, less crashy, less dive. I could even see fresh  rubber being scuffed off the front tyre. So much more confidence in it.  Well chuffed.

Nice work Grassy Noel :thumb:

I shouldn't be , but I am always surprised just how well a nicely fettled 650 will go round a bumpy corner, as  quite a few  supposedly   " quicker " bikes ocasionally find out , if they get in the way of the Mighty 650 and a corner..... look out !!.... Strom coming through... :icon_wink: ......Summers warm grippy roads are nearly here   :lala:

I lowered my seat! It instantly feels more comfortable. Although I'm 6ft1", I don't have long legs. I noticed that the sides of the seat were digging in to my inner thigh, and I felt as though I was being tipped forward. I'm looking forward to a ride off more than an hour, hopefully I'll not be raising it up again.
I also installed my phone cradle/wireless charger next to my sat-nav on the accessory bar. . It's no longer looking pretty, to be honest, it's downright ugly, it'll do the job, and when the phone is in place it's OK. .

Yet another oil change. I don't like the idea of Suzukis recommended 7,500 miles so change it halfway , as I have done from new .
No.. I am  definitely NOT starting an oil thread ....Upt  :icon_wink:
Bit late this time , due to my inability to find a sump plug washer I KNOW was there last time I looked :GRR: and having to wait for those nice fleabay blokes to get in their van and deliver some new ones  :icon_wink:  But still clearish and brown .

Must book in a visit to the recycling center to dump the old oils .....

Then took it out on the same route I did on the RR yesterday when I realised I had not done a back to back ride on the same roads.
Pretty much what you would expect. The RR is MUCH quicker down the straight bits, and damn good on the fast corners. But on the bumpy tighter bits ( so most of Norfolk ) , say below 80 mph , my fettled 650 is probably quicker over the ground.

The big differences are that I don't worry about a summons after getting back on the Strom and also that on the RR after that 3 hrs I was Fecked... but on the Strom I could easily have done the whole thing again straight off  , just for shits and giggles.

Strom wins  ....

Had a fantastic ride out to Thetford Forest this evening, there are some excellent roads out there. Only an 80 mile round trip, but a couple of hours enjoyment.

The poor VStrom has sat, neglected of late, due to the completion of my custom Triumph project and also the wish to put some miles on my GS, but today was breakfast day and the Exford Bridge Tea Rooms was a'calling.

I have been here before and the breakfast was great, I know the route, so off we went.

W-s-M to Bridgwater by M5, then through the town, and over to Enmore, from there to Bishops Lydeard and then onto the real fun roads.

However, for the first time ever with my trusty steed, I was 'making good progress' uphill, having just crossed a cross roads when I heard a tap... then another, from somewhere below and possibly to my left.... difficult to say when one is partly deaf and wearing earplugs, but a glance down revealed the issue... the gear change lever was about to depart the shaft it sits on.

Up and over the hill in 5th, with a little clutch slipping as I had slowed to look down. Soon enough I found a gateway and took a proper look.

The circlip and washer on the outside of the gearchange lever were gone! No idea how, but there we are, so out came the cable ties and a solution of sorts was cobbled together (see pic below). I would have clipped the unneeded part off but... another discovery, no knife / side cutters... note to self; buy a Leatherman.

The Heath Robinson solution lasted the rest of the way to Exford... and for the return journey.

I was the only customer and the breakfast was excellent. Herb sausages, nice tasy bacom and mushrooms cooked in butter with just a twist of seasoning, mmmmmmmm.

The return home was via Dulverton, a really delightful little Devon village, then Bampton, Wiveliscombe and to Taunton where I confess I picked up the M5 in an effort to reduce the number of gear changes required to get home.

Once home a 10.5mm (ish) circlip was found, along with a suitable sized washer and all was quickly fixed.

150 miles of fun, sun, breakfast and empty twisties.
The older I get, the better I was.

I’ve just had a couple of days riding around Exmoor, Neil.

I camped at The Ralegh’s Cross Inn campsite for two nights. Got back today.👍
