Buying fuel at an auto pump I discovered that the usual £1 test of the card has been upped to £120!

Good to know, that will catch out people wanting to buy £20 of fuel with £30 in the bank. Nice to see fuel companies are looking out for the regular punters...

I use my barclaycard to pay at the pump and its never "tested" it

I think the pre-pay cards get the full treatment to make sure its got the funds, could be wrong .

All cards/accounts are tested. I don't do that mobile phone banking app dodab but a friend does and his phone registers the £1 withdrawal. After he has taken fuel the £1 is returned to his account within an hour or so.  Being without phone banking I would never know about this.

They upped it to £100 quite a while back, was on the news and everything talking about exactly the scenario 2112 talks about and recommending people on their last tenner pay at kiosk. I saw it was up to £120 last week but I'm quite glad since a fill from the fuel light is a ton plus on the barge and so I couldn't brim her and pay at pump.

I've never had £1 "tested" then returned using pay at pump. The pump will authorise a level of expenditure which you mustn't exceed, but I only ever get one bill, for the amount dispensed. I have heard that the authorised amount is "ring-fenced" in your account to give time for the exact amount to be transmitted to the bank. But never a £1 test transaction.

Our local pay at the pump station (it's unmanned, so all pumps) has 4 limits that you press for. £20, £50, £80 & £100. When you reach that limit it stops pumping. It does say checking  card when you first put it into the slot but if it's checking for sufficient funds, or it's a valid card, before delivery I don't know. I've never seen an 'additional' amount on the balance.
If we fill up elsewhere, the odd one does take a pre-payment amount, but it's all sorted within hours.
The only time we got caught out was in France. On our first fill up, on arrival, it took 100 euros from the card. Then it showed the correct cost for the petrol we had, 18/20 euros,  but we didn't get the 100 euros back for 5 days!!! That was on a pre-paid Post Office card. After that we paid for petrol by credit card. It did the same with that card but it was all sorted by the time it came to pay the balance.

Same here in France, Mick. Maybe they do that with 'foreign' cards like ours.
