I think the state of our roads and keeping up with the jones's on the electrical side is what is dominating the design of bikes now, not forgetting that they are not only made for the UK market.
Bikes with longer travel suspension and a comfortable riding position is of great importance on bumpy, potholed roads and the people who can afford to buy and insure them are getting older and don't want sports bikes anymore. I'm grateful though to the people who do want the latest sports bikes with all the technology, I would love to be able to ride a modern sports bike again but my back won't let me and my desire to ride very fast if I did own one would loose my licence, been there and done that.
All that technology feeds down to our type of bike and as long as they don't overload the tech onto our type of bike and just transfer the useful stuff that's a good thing. I do think manufactures should make a basic model of all their bikes, sell them cheaper and give us less of the crap that goes wrong. Gone are the days though when you could fix a bike on the side of the road or if you couldn't then some passing motorcyclist would stop and share your problem.
These statements show my age and I know that if I was younger I would be riding something like a Honda Fireblade. Track days would be such a treat. The last track day I did was on a BMW R100GS and even that could pass some of the fast bikes.
