What would you buy?
« on: January 09, 2024, 16:36:14 »
Imagine your bike is worn out and beyond reasonable repair.
If your exact current motorcycle was still available, would you buy it again?
If not, what next?
or
Is there a motorcycle from your past that you would buy again if only new ones were available.?

This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Honestly yes, I would probably have another Vee, I like the uncomplicatedness of it.
Direct controls, minimal electronics, good motor, everything you need, nothing you don't type stuff.

From the current crop though I would go 1050 Strom with the head, Pan America with the heart (and the inheritance).

Good question Brockett,
I never intended to keep my current bike (1260s Multi) as long as I have. Sadly its replacement (Multistrada V4) is not for me, it has no character and guzzles petrol. I'm seriously looking at the Moto Guzzi V7.

I'd definitely buy another Gen 2 650.  :thumb:
I'd also like a Yamaha DS7, the 2nd bike I bought circa 1971/2 at 17/18yrs of age. (I'd been riding a BSA C15 for a couple of years but needed something 'legal' to travel to & from a new job).
The other bike I'd like is the Honda VFR800 I sold not long after getting the V-Strom.
The 1st photo isn't my DS7 but the same colour.
The 2nd my VFR
The 3rd photo is Deb & myself circa 1972 (notice the hair line is more forward than of late & the beer belly is still under construction.  :thumb:

I thought the "beer belly" was a "breakfast belly", Mick. Good picture.  :thumb:

Plenty of bikes I'd happily own including another Weestrom.
However yes if my exact current [KTM] motorcycle was still available I would buy it again.

Urm I would buy another Varadero.
Super comfy, perfect mile muncher, old tech grunty angry engine. But a bit heavy with a liking for unleaded.

I was looking for another Wee or Vee when my K6 wee died suddenly, but new was out of budget and local 2nd hand prices were stupidly high for poor condition bikes and transport was needed... Varadero was in budget and good condition with low miles.

I regret allowing the SWMBO trding the Enfield Bullet 500 as I really enjoyed a little spin on it, but then she did swap it for a muscle bike and the GSX1400 does put a grin on my face  :auto-dirtbike:

I would probably buy another tiger, I've test rode just about everything out there and nothing has yelled 'buy me' so tigger it is  :thumb:

However, if Yamaha get their finger out and produce a shaft drive triple of say 1300cc that they can use in a tourer, super-naked and adventure bike, I would be interested. Obviously it would need radar cuise control, conering ABS, traction/anti wheelie, connectivity, luggage options etc. Ideally, looking like a proper off-roader with a massive beak and in garish colour options. But I'd certainly test drive one...

Tough to say. I think I'd likely get another 650 L2. It's just so very comfortable, reliable, has reasonable power, a nice design... very tough to beat, especially because I don't really care about all the electronics of new bikes (except for ABS).

If money wasn't an issue I might get one of them fancy new Triumph Tigers though, either a 900 or 1200. Although if this was the case (regarding the financials) I would get a whole array of different motorcycles indeed!  :auto-dirtbike:

I would replace with another early, low mileage CB500X. They are cheap, circa £3K, and do all I need now my wife doesn’t want to tour on pillion.

I would happily buy another 650.

It does everything I want and is very easy to live with.

Would I have one of my bikes from the past? In addition to, but not a replacement for the VStrom.

An 850 Commando would be nice to try again and a Laverda always turns heads, sadly my old one has been SORN for years... what a waste.
The older I get, the better I was.

 :bow-blue: top thread Brockett.

Like Endintears I would buy another KTM 1190, it ticks every box for me. If I had a bigger garage I would like to add another smaller lighter bike. I may have been looking at the later Cagiva 650 Raptor with injection. It has the wonderful Suzuki 650 Vtwin in an Italian frame and Brembo brakes. :icon_wink:
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Hugo, Although Deb did ride pillion on a few occasions I hadn't passed my test back then (& didn't until a few years later) she had her own bike, a BSA Bantam 175.
We passed our tests together almost 20 years later, owning a few bikes here & there over the following years until the VFR came along when she became a 'permanent' fixture on the back.

Rusty, I'm afraid the beer started the downward (or outward) slope long before my job as breakfast tester!

Has the breakfast testing helped stem it's growth though Mick?

Asking for a friend.

A friend gave me a copy of Bike magazine and as I flipped through it I found there was not one bike featured on it's glossy pages that held any interest. Yes, I know it's a sign of my age and while I am not about to sing " I'll go no more a rovin" it is nevertheless true that I am just not able to handle the machines I had  only a few years ago. I must say that I do quite like the look and the sound of the Royal Enfield 350 classic. It is a pity that it only produces about the same power as my 1961 350 Enfield Bullet.  I believe the current 350 is restricted via it's ECU to a speed/ power limit that is required in India. If they make  500 single or a 350 with another 10 BHP I think I would buy one to potter about on. I still have both V7 Guzzis and one day I I hope to revive the XJ600 again. So a stable with a single a twin and a four is about right. I've had a good look at the 650 Gold Star and for me it's not as good as it should be.

I would have a Norton Commando Fastback, 1970's. I always wanted one but never did get it and have never even rode one.
