hard luggage

hello - I would be grateful for any advice.  I have 2014 650 V strom love it 1st bike only had it for 2 years.  It came with givi small hard panniers and I would like to upgrade to hard larger cases.  There is so much to choose from new and secondhand can anyone point me in the right direction ?! any tips be gratefully received.

In my opinion you simply cannot beat the old school top loading ally boxes. They are so much easier to use than lids that hinge down. If you remove the two mushrooms and ‘toblerone’ shaped locking piece you will be left with bare frames to fit them to.

If you pick up a second hand pair you will have to adjust the locations of the pucks that are usually used to fit them, but that is simple enough.

I have both but still prefer the plastic side loading cases for lightness. Alloy cases and frames are heavy before you start adding luggage but for my RTW trip top loading alloy cases were chosen for their strength in case of a fall and the ability to strap things on top of them like a tent. As you have frames already the cheapest option is to change the cases for any of the E range like the E45/E36 or standard Trekker. The Outback versions required heavier frames. The V range use different shaped frames altogether. There should be plenty on fleebay to chose from to save money and getting coded locks to match a top case is easy.

As the previous post, I also prefer side loading panniers.
I have Shad SH36  with 3P support.
Maybe better because:
They are more light than alus.
You have more loading flexibility with side loading than top side loading.
They are cheaper than the others.

Also I had H&B  semirigid panniers on my old Bandit 650, with C bow fitting system.

They was waterproof (also 12 years later), lights and C bow its nice, because seems like there is no pannier frame in the machine.

If you want to save dosh and keep your current pannier frames, you have to identify exactly which panniers you have on. As they are Givi they will be either 'e' or 'v' type. see HERE for examples (there are older 'e' type panniers knocking around, too). Then once you have id'd them, you know what pannier frame you have, and can choose a bigger set of panniers. Try Ebay, and shops like this one https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/

this is all very helpful thank you - I have the V35 givi side panniers - that makes sense re the weight of the metal ones.

Maybe I will keep the side panniers as they are and then get a bigger top box thanks for your help

And as you've probably sussed by now, the v35 cases and their frames are specific to each other. If you want bigger panniers you'll have to switch frames.
