Glee being temperamental starting after night of fog
« on: October 16, 2018, 09:31:05 »
So as many of you in the south of England will know, this morning was foggy. I did what I always do, gear up and walk out to hop on the bike and get to work. However, today I turned my ignition, let it do its regular checks, waited for the needle to go back to 0 and then pulled the clutch, pressed the button.
Nothing.
The flight dimmed slightly on my dash to indicate the starter motor pulled current for a moment, but no crank, no go.
After 10 minutes of back trying, suddenly it sputtered to life as if nothing had happened.
Any ideas?
I live in a flat so no option to properly dry store in a garage. I didn't have the bike covered (I'll be amending this) but I would have though the loom should be properly protected against fog.
Any ideas what cables to check and possibly reinforce with tape?

This bike just feels like it's plagued with electrical faults as it wouldn't be the first time I've had %£$! like this

If lights were dimming it suggests as you say there is current being drawn so maybe it is getting as far as switching the starter motor solonoid.
But I suspect advice/help is on the way, members on here have had Glee "electrical issues" before, especially in damp weather.

Yes, what happens to the headlights, if they are v weak, worth testing battery.
But I bet our professional, kwackboy, is right (again!), clutch switch dodgy. See HERE for someone with similar issues...

Battery is about a year old. I don't think it'll be that already as the bike is used daily (partner has the car) so it shouldn't have degraded that much.
Plus, when it cranks, it cranks absolutely fine, not half arsed.
The lights aren't dim and they don't brighten under use high revving.
I'll work through that post though, his problem sounds near identical to mine

Just had a quick look at the clutch switch cable and the pins don't look corroded but there is a bit of exposed wire which could cause water ingress. when I get home, I'll WD40 and reinforce with some wire insulation tape. Hopefully it'll be a bit better protected from the weather.
Damn these wet British winters.

Just because the battery is only a year old doesn't mean it couldn't 'fail'. However if it cranks fine, when it decides to, it does sound as if it's OK. Worth putting a meter on it though.
I'd check the battery & earth connections are good too.

It's not the wires going into the switch that cause the problem , it's the little plunger that moves in and out when you pull the clutch lever. The contacts inside the switch wear out .

A new switch is £20 fitted at my local dealer. Probably wouldn't be hard to fit myself but I can't be bothered to stand out in the rain \ cold.
Sounds like it's a pretty common one to them as well.
