oil, in where
« on: March 11, 2024, 17:13:31 »
hi blokes,
just took of the stator cover to check the magnets, I have a charging problem, I found about a thimble full of engine oil on them and the stator, don't think that's right. is this just a failed gasket or something else?
now what’s best product to clean off the stator and magnets, brake cleaner? ordered new gasket but do I need any kind of sealer?
please give any advice.

thanks blokes.

The really quick answer is I haven't been in there and I don't know.
But.....don't spray it with brake cleaner or anything else until someone more knowledgeable chimes in.
I suspect what you're describing is normal and not an issue. Stator can and do run in oil but I've never been inside the VSTROM.
Hold fire.
Someone will know for sure.

The first instruction in the service manual for the 650 with regards generator removal is....drain oil....

I just replaced the stator in my 05 650 and can assure you the stators in both the 650 and 1000 are designed to run in the engine oil. that's why they have a gasket on the stator cover.
No need to dump the oil, just lean the bike over to the right onto suitable supports.
