Learned a lesson that day!
« on: October 22, 2021, 18:37:11 »
Not long had the bike when I took this and learned that day not to park in the direction of an up slope. Was easy enough getting it on the centre stand but a right bugger to get it off.

Side stand and leaving it in first gear next time

I remember parking mine on the side stand on the side of a hill, with the side stand down hill & fully loaded with luggage. Needed my inner hulk to lift that one up  :haha:

+1 for leaving the bike in gear even when the parking place is flat.Look at the sidestand, this is the result of a car reversing into a mates bike and pushing it into mine.If the bike had not been in gear, it would have fell over into another bike in front of mine.

Never park it on the side stand facing down hill.
And although there is not much you can do about it .... a rear tyre that is punctured and flat will often topple the bike over a side stand, and by jingo it's a real beast to get it onto a centre stand.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Seen quite a few BM 1100 and 1150 GS's ridden off the centre stand when the owner was a bit of a PORG.

An old thread I know, but an important lesson that many may still learn the hard way, hence the thread bump.
If one has to make use of the center stand, may I suggest that you invest in a velcro type strap system, to tie up the front brake lever to the grip. If the front wheel can't rotate (DIY handbrake), the center stand should hold. There have been cases where a little forward movement would allow some of the stands brands to allow the bike to fall. https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php?topic=11388.0

For those new to parking the bike in gear while on the side stand, remember to 1st roll the bike forward against 1st gear compression, before setting the bike's weight on the side stand. This should prevent any forward movement, that may allow the stand to fold up.

There was also a mod that was suggested for the side stand that did not extend forward enough. Read the write-up regarding the mod on https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/kickstand-modification.432423/   I would also advise that if you should intend undertaking this side stand / kick stand mod, get a second opinion from a knowledgeable motorcycle specialist.
