"tyretotravel"
« on: October 28, 2014, 20:55:26 »
Anyone on here ever used "tyretotravel".
It was suggested as a route planning add on for my Tom Tom but on the grounds that nothing is free ....
Is it a subscription service? or how is it paid for?
Any problems with it?

It's OK as a freebie Dave and I have used it OK.

There are some advert bars to the right, but you can switch them off if you subscribe. I don't find them too intrusive though.

Was up til 1am last night trying to download it to my laptop, Norton was having none of it.... kept saying it wasn't a 'safe programme' and blocked every attempt I made to load it. After speaking to 'live chat' someone somewhere allowed the instal and tonight I've just finished plotting a route to work tomorrow. We'll see how it works with my TomTom Rider V5. Paid the extra 5 Euros to have the Advert Free version as those Dutch ads at the side of the screen do my head in.

Norton is too aggressive. I use AVG free.

I have the rider v5 and tyre file is installed on it complete with the pro licence. Tyre was installed from the tomtom and as long as my rider is connected to the laptop it uses the licence. I have used it to try a local run and I like it.

Tyretotravel is easy to use and easy to transfer to your satnav.
When you plan your route put in plenty of way points otherwise your Sat Nav will make up its own route.
The info you are transferring is the  is the start /finish/way points not the route itself so you have to force your satnav to bend to your will with lots of way points.
we found out the hard way. spent hours planning the routes, dragging them around to pick up the wiggly roads then sent them to our friends. We all went to France with different routes in our navs even two Zumo 550 navs put in different routes. The best way points are normally a mile or so past a town that way you get the benefit off bypasses etc and you will be on the road you want out of town, not what the satnav wants to do.
Too young to be in care, too old to remember why.

Take care to zoom in when setting a waypoint too, to make sure it's on the road you want to travel on. It might sound obvious, but it's really easy to drop it on a nearby road when you're zoomed out too far, with the net result that you end up taking an unexpected detour at some point. Not that that's ever happened to me of course.  :shy:

I agree with the other posters - Tyre is an excellent piece of software for route planning (and playback of routes captured with GPS logging applications). There's a lot of functionality in it, which can be a bit daunting at first, but a lot of it isn't needed for basic route planning. I particularly like the way you can switch between Tyre and Google Maps when researching a suitable route.
