Cymarc foot peg lowering kit review
« on: July 29, 2018, 09:15:32 »
Just thought I'd let you know how good the Cymarc foot peg lowering kit is and the difference its made.

This is for a 2018 DL1000XT just for those wondering if his kit fits the new model

I'm 6ft2 still fairly young, OK 45, but noticed after riding to Wales how I felt just a tad cramped so decided I want this bike to be super comfy. So after reading some of the posts on here decided to buy Cymarc's foot lowering kit and can honestly say this has made a huge difference in comfort and for £35ish all in.

Dead easy to fit and ALL you need is provided (after watching some Youtube vids for a little confidence) the only awkward bit is the brake linkage and making sure the brake light still works.

The gear side is simply add the lowering plate (no changes to the linkage was required for me)

Add a little loctite just to be sure and torque up to 23nm and all done

100% happy with the outcome and the kit is very high quality.

SO if you're feeling a little cramped on long trips then it really is worth the outlay

I fitted a lowering kit to my 1000 AL4 (not from Cymarc as they weren't doing them at the time). It's surprising just how much of a difference an inch or two makes. Ahem.

Update on my footpegs

they were fitted at the end of July and now they have bent inwards (at the bottom) causing my side stand to foul with the gear selector link.

Bike hasn't been dropped and done only motorway miles (about 1000 since I fitted them)

Both sides have bent inwards

Have contacted Cymarc (with photos) but as of yet no reply

Just to show the end of the peg to prove it hasn't been dropped

Hello there Big Cats and firstly I’m very sorry you didn’t get a reply (and I Don’t know why- can you confirm the email address you used?), secondly it’s very very rare we have a failure on these indeed we’ve sold hundreds of them! Anyhoo, I do pride myself on my reputation even when it costs me so we would be delighted to make you a set in stainless steel at no extra cost and for you to try. It’ll cost me a f*ck tonne of money to make but I don’t care :) reputation is everything.

So, please contact me using any and all of the following contact details with your address and we will get this sorted out!

Interesting mine bent sometime ago but I 've had no issues with this

I am after one of these kits but now I am a bit wary. Is the material the plate is made of up to the job? I am not light at 110kg with bike gear on and don't want these bending. Would be more comfortable if the plates were powder coated mild steel but I guess they are alloy. I may well be wrong.

bigred, I am 20 stone and had one of Cymarcs lowering kits fitted on my K8 with no issues at all, and did 32000 miles on it  so I think it was just unlucky :auto-dirtbike:

Are people standing on their pegs to mount the bike? I can't see any other reason that a plate as substantial as that would bend in normal use, even as mild steel.

Does anyone know whether the lowering kit plate is heat treated / tempered? Standing on the peg to mount, should not be a factor, unless the gauge metal of the lowering kit is possibly on the lean side? Sometimes it is necessary to stand on the footpeg to mount, when the passenger seat has camping gear tied in place, etc.
It would be interesting to confirm if there is any plate gauge difference between the different lowering kit brands.

I agree. If there have been instances of bending, regardless of whether you stand on the pegs to mount the bike, then the material or thickness is inadequate. I have bought a pair but I doubt I will fit them. They are 6mm alloy but have no idea if they have been heat treated. Bumping them up to 8mm plate or using mild steel with a powder coat would be a couple of possible answers to this issue.

My follow up to the point about standing on the pegs then: is this with the sidestand down? I'm honestly curious as I've not used the pegs to mount since I was a kid and my dad held the bike up for me to get on.

I sometimes stand on the pegs with the side stand down to get on my BMW.
For me as I'm a little short l, it depends if I'm fully loaded or wearing trousers that affect my dexterity.
I would imaging though standing on pegs with a lowering kit fitted would cause extra stresses.

Has anyone managed to bend a right hand one? If it's only left side,  it may be that mounting the bike via the peg is what's done it.
I'm gobsmacked they have bent, when you look at the small amount of "overhang" that's involved. Mine were happy and straight after 20,000 miles and more, and I did "climb up" when fully loaded.
Any cases of Richland Rick's plates bending?
Maybe Mark got a duff batch of ally plate?
Maybe 6mm vs. 1/4" plate is enough of a difference in thickness?

After reading some of the other positive feedback on here for this mod, I decided to fit them. I am very glad of the extra legroom they provide and so far so good. I haven't noticed any issues with reduced ground clearance yet either but I have yet to test the bike fully loaded with luggage and a passenger. Mind you, when the her ladyship is onboard I won't be allowed to hoon around corners :smirk:

I am just in the process of fitting these.  Does anyone know what the torque values are for the allen bolts which go through the plate and into the frame?
