Title: Phone Holder - Recommendations
Post by: Berty5000 on April 11, 2024, 20:23:46
My current one has broken.

Need something sturdy, reliable, and capable of holding a typical sized modern smart phone (ie. Not small). I have a cross bracel on the handle bars already.

Any suggestions?

I've got a chinese no-name quadlock bracket, and a quadlock wireless charger, and genuine quadlock case for my phone. Seems to work absolutely spot on, get the poncho (or use a plastic bag and rubber band) for waterproofing if you want!

Have you found a USB connector that doesn't work its way out of the 12V socket?

Ride just reviewed these.
Best Buy was Quad Lock (case, poncho, mount and damper) £113.98 and you can buy wireless charging too (Mag case comes with car mounts)
Recommended was Ultimateaddons (case, mount) for £64.99 although was on offer for when they wrote it for £50. Said it was the better waterproof option but a bit of a faff to take in and out, though better option if staying in the case all day
No wireless charging but there is a cable port.

The mag mount (wireless charger) isn't for use on bikes. The cases are compatible though IIRC.

The wireless charger I have has a 12V connection so it'll fast charge my phone, connected into my accessory switched wiring.

I’ve been looking for a mount and case for my phone. However, I can’t find my Samsung A33 listed when it comes to selecting a case in any of the listings.🤷‍♂️

It looks like I need to measure my phone and plum for the nearest universal case I suppose.🤔

Ultimate Addons case and mount.
Various options for the mounts to suit you and various model specific cases and some universal fitment options- just check the sizing, my Samsung A54 fitted perfectly in one of the universal cases.

I've had three cases for different phones and still use the same mount.

Ooh, an important one, make sure you get a vibration dampener if you have a modern smartphone. A lot of cameras have OIS (the lens is mounted on tiny little rods and moved by electromagnets), and if you mount this rigidly to something that vibrates a lot, it can damage the mechanism.

So mine is chinese quadlock-like mount, to chinese quadlock-like vibe dampener, to Quadlock wireless charger.

This will be my last bike, so I’ve decided to spend money trying out anything I fancy. 😉

If you fancy being super tight like me, I use one of these Garmin mounts. I already had it tbf so the quarter turn mounts for the phone case cost about £2 with the 3M backing and I used the cheap case to stick the mounting to. That case lives in the top box and I've got a smarter one for when it's not on the bike. Because the spacing bung material is rubber, the mount doesn't rotate at all on the accessory bar but can still flex a bit to deal with vibration or our amazing roads. Total cost £4.50.

Phild,

That's the phone I have - just bought it recently to replace the A31 I dropped on the garage floor. It seems pretty big - although it doesn't help that I have a fully enclosed protector for it to insure against future clumsiness! Let me know what you find by way of suitable holders.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I prefer the case style, which I saw today at J&S.

In case anybody is interested, here is my current one, which was on the bike when I bought it. It is quite heavy duty and integrated with the windscreen frame. Position is good and it is unusual for the phone to get wet even when it's raining and never enough to be a problem. The things I don't like about it are that the arm which extends from the top vibrates terribly when a phone isn't in the holder and it gets on my nerves. Secondly, it isn't designed for larger phones. My A31 just about fits it with some force but has ultimately caused one of the plastic feet to break off, hence why I need a replacement.

Think I'll be going with the ultimate add ons one having looked more at it. Seems reasonably priced and they do a kit. 37 quid. Waterproof and vibration protection. Although it doesn't look as though the handbar gripper would fit the cross brace on my XT's handlebars and that might also be in the way. Any ideas?

Also, has anybody found a 12V socket USB plug that stays in when on the road? The cheapo one I had kept falling out when I was riding.

Once I’ve got whatever I choose fitted, I’ll take a photo and put it on the thread.👍

To clarify,
The mount ,case , and usb twin port connector I have are all from UA. The case was a Universal type.No problems with any of it so far. But the fingerprint sensor doesn't work with the case,I double tap the screen to turn it on and use my pin to open phone, double tap on a clear part of screen to shut off the screen. I did buy the longer usb cable they offer but in the end the one with the kit was fine, so I use the spare at home when the phone stays in the case, a normal connector won't fit the case..It also comes with a safety larriatte ,just in case, but again it is very secure on the mount.I have it mounted on the bars and doesn't interfere with the dash view, I would mount it high , more line of sight, but that makes my screen noisy.

I took delivery of the Ultimateaddons kit today, my son is now the proud beneficiary of it.

I have a Samsung A33, so I needed the XL case…..and it’s big. I didn’t even try to fully fit it as it dwarfed my TomTom satnav. Iwould have had to have it longitudinal all the time, and I didn’t like the crowded look. I also held it as if I mounted it on my mirror arm…. no thanks.

I tried but failed….. for which my son is truly grateful.🙁

Ah yes, finding space for phone and Sat Nav is tricky and heads up Sat Nav is too nice not to have. I have a tanklock bag with the phone window on the top for if I really need the phone visible. Can't say as I've used it much but it's an option.

That is the slight problem with the larger phones.

I now use my older and much smaller S7 to run maps mounted above the dash and the newer and bigger A54 in my pocket running as a moblie hotspot.

A word of warning, mounting the phone in landscape and plugged is could cause the connection to fry if plugged in and raining whitch led to the demise of my much loved S10.
I now only mount the phones portrait.

I love my QuadLock, mounts my iPhone securely in either portrait or landscape, has navigation and all my music in one place. Plus, I twist and go and have the same mount in my car, cheaper than multiple bits of kit plus nothing left on the bike to steal. 😊

I Got to ask..
If you have the tom tom.. why do you need the phone on the dash too??

Just my thoughts on phones on bikes..(or in cars)
If I am out on my bike I don't want to be answering phone calls..  (I rarely do in the car)
If I want navigation a phone isn't the best screen to be looking at..
(Get a Sat Nav... Of whatever flavour you fancy..) personally I will be buying the new Beeline Moto 2 (shame I can't get one before I leave on my euro road trip)
Phones seem to get rattled to bits even with so called "dampers"... Pee wet through etc etc...
In the event of "an off" the phone may be a distance from you/smashed/in a hedge.... At least in your inside pocket it stands a chance of survival
Oh.. music...  Make a play list and leave it on..  (seems most headset/intercoms have buttons to mute etc..  )
Easy to be distracted and walk away from your bike with it still in public view....

When I am on the bike I just want to get away from it all...  I don't want more distractions..
The only thing I really would like is the Beeline... And the phone can stay in my pocket for that. and at £200, the cost of the £100 mount is half way there..
Just my thoughts....

Hi AdventureSi,
I have a Beeline, and it is great( well since it has had updates and stops freezing it is ) I use it mostly in compass mode, just to keep me in round about the right direction  :icon_wink: on my wanders. Not found another satnav that does this, but could be wrong, not really looked too hard . The beeline app is soooo easy to use ,setting way points is a doddle. And it pops in my pocket unnoticed when off the bike .
I also have the ultimate addons case ,but that lives mostly in my tail pack next to my old dumb phone(as back up,always seems to get a signal) and use the case for google maps and Sygic (Sygic works without a  phone signal /data connection ) You would be suprised how many out of the way places in the UK you cannot get a signal still.
I don't use a head set, not found a need to,and would not listen to music anyway on the bike,as you say too distracting.
Just as a heads up Beeline now has the option of voice prompts (with a subscription).I won't get it, I think.
Having got used to the beeline saying turn left 1.5 miles ahead ( or whatever ) over the last couple of years, I have got really good at judging distance with the practise, so don't find no voice prompts a problem.

Quick update,
Beeline Plus........,voice prompts ,is £35 a year. ....Bit steep.
But you can get it for £4 for a month with the first month free , so two months for £4, and cancel any time , no contract..
Get it for a big trip and  then cancel it ?
