stock screen nirvana, almost there
« on: October 23, 2009, 15:56:26 »
OK so I have the screen on the highest setting with 3 nylon M6 washers (B&Q £2) inserted on the lower bolts to tilt it back. 70-80% cured the buffeting. Fitted the hand guards today and that has improved it to about 90-95%. Maybe I'll hold off with that MRA after all

having just spent a fair amount getting myself a vee I figured I would try and "fix" (bodge really) my stock screen.

had some leftover bits from my TV wall mount including longer bolts to fit the stock screen mount holes and some plastic spacer thingys, I've put the larger ones about 20mm ish at the bottom and 10mm at the top which has not only tilted the screen back but also give more of a gap at the bottom of the screen, on reading lots and lots about the screen both seem to be crucial to helping to cure the buffeting.

the verdict so far is good, only had time to go for a quick test blast but so far much less buffeting so fingers crossed it'll work for longer rides too.

If I get time will measure the spacers properly, every little helps and all that, just fyi the stock screen mount is as high as it can possibly safely with bolts in the very bottom 4 holes, longer bolts were essential, stock would be way too short,

will take piccies if poss too but short on time lately

I haven't found the stock screen too bad at all, the lowest position suits me best. I have since put spacers under the lower bolts and this has smoothed out the airflow even more.
I'm happy enough with it that I won't be looking for an aftermarket screen, which I was expecting to after hearing bad reports about the screen. I guess it depends on your height whether it suits you or not.

Your helmet is in the path of the airflow over your screen so it's also a factor in the buffeting equation. Some people have reported that simply changing their helmet to a different one has made big differences in the amount of buffeting they experience.

well its better and worse in some ways, more buffeting between 80-90 but then smoother outside of that area, so have to ride faster or slower  :GRR: think I'm just going to have to go for an MRA when the mrs has recovered from me buying the vee ;)
