If you mean the little black one they put on the 650X, then it depends what you mean by good.....

It looks good and is not too noisy on the lowest setting, but the wind protection is only average (still better than some sports bikes though).

Tried moving it up but all it did was look horrible and generate a lot of noise.

Rode all winter on the lowest setting and was happy enough, but I let an R1200RT owning mate ride it and he was a'grumblin....

Having owned a 1200RT myself , I'm not surprised he was complaining , those bikes have great weather protection - even my current bike 1100RT cannot compare with the 12 .

I like it, you get quite a lot of wind, but it's 'clean wind'. Unusual around you [says mrs derbex].Great in the summer for keeping coool (idiotic filter), I suppose less good in the winter -but I still prefer it to the stock screen as I don't get the buffeting.

Well, I took the trim off the top of it cos the clips had gone rusty and looked horrible, but other than that I'm leaving mine as it is.

Rather have less overall protection than a lot of noise and buffeting.

I've got a 650X with the sports screen on its highest setting. (I'm 6'1")

Fine in good weather: not much turbulence around my head and the bike doesn't weave at speed.
However, it is noisy; I can't ride without ear protection, and in bad weather the rain is sent straight into my visor making it difficult to progress without wiping the visor every few seconds. This means I can't ride with the visor cracked open and so it mists up inside in heavy rain (if I do open it I get rain on my glasses, so still can't see.)
In heavy weather it is a case of wipe, open, close, wipe, open, close... just to be able to see where I'm going.

A question for any MRA owners: does it help with rain and wind noise? (with or without a Madstad bracket)

In my opinion the MRA (tall touring) seems to help in foul weather, the bulk of the rain is deflected off. The problem is the rain that does reach your visor doesn't get pushed away by the wind, it's too effective in a way. The old trick of turning your head side to side won't budge it. So it's back to a wipe with the finger but on the whole an improvement, Bry.

Well, having read all the comments about screens, I have finally taken the plunge and ordered the touring (tall) MRA screen.
I have had several days of riding in rain almost every rush hour, and it has been a pain trying to keep my visor clear of road spray and rain, so I have great expectations of the MRA.
I'm hoping it arrives and I have time to fit it before Easter.

can't wait for the update on how it performs.
I've been looking at the MRA screen for months ( probably the tall one ) but can't make my mind up if its worth it.
Hope it does the job for you.

Re: screen - First impressions

The tall MRA screen arrived yesterday and I fitted it last night in the rain. It is in the highest position with the wing at its widest setting.
So after one 35 mile journey in dirty weather along country, (low speed) motorway and urban roads, here are my first impressions.
 Pros:
  • Definitely better than the tiny sports screen
  • Reduces wind buffeting (doesn't remove it)
  • keeps spray and some rain off visor
  • you can ride with the visor cracked open without getting too much rain inside
Cons:
  • Makes filtering more difficult, especially in the rain, as you are looking through the screen instead of over it for mirrors, etc.
  • My visor mists up, (less air flow) so I have to ride with it cracked open.
Maybe I need to fiddle with it to get the best out of it. One ride isn't enough to be definite about the pros and cons.

Any further observations on the tall MRA screen Graham? I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm a short-arse (5'8") and can't decide between tall and 'short' MRA (tending to the tall one - I can always set it low). My X has the sports screen on a madstad, big improvement, but might need more for longer trips at sustained speeds...
