Could just be stones picked up from the front wheel and rattling themselves between the wheel and the mudguard. When I first heard this crunching noise I thought it was the engine until I realised it was the stones rattling! ????

The only odd rattle I found was the plastic clip which holds the front brake hose to the back of the front mudguard. It was/is still very loose. Bike vibrations, especially a certain resonant frequency sets it off. It's taken me three years to find it, in fact when I recently took the front wheel out to have a new tyre put on!   :GRR:

Intriguing thread........
So how's it going so far then?

@Joe Rocket... yea, that clip is a bad design  :icon_no:
In my defence, she did leave me unsupervised.

Well finally get it back today with nothing found! I'll report if I hear anything.
If it fails mechanically I still have the rest of the warranty of about 20 months, hopefully won't need it.
