Home made MRA screen. ish
« on: May 04, 2015, 20:45:21 »
Following SimonW's thread viewtopic.php?f=23&t=26206 and my subsequent comments, it gave me a bit of an idea....

I had a pigeon smashed screen, some bits of cut off aluminium sheet, a jig saw, an old school ruler, a vice and a 5lb lump hammer. Took me a couple of hours (and it shows).

It's secured by double sided foam tape, I figured the forces will be compression and shear so the tape will be fine. I guessed at the angle based on other MRA type screens, it can be adjusted on the set screws and moved by heating up the tape and moving up and down the main screen.

I went for a quick ride this afternoon A, B roads and motorways . It works, wind noise reduced significantly, buffeting at SPEED eliminated.

Yes I'm a tight arse. :)
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

What's your vice?  :)

(maybe that should be a thread all of its own, along the lines of "what have you done today", "what are you listening to" etc.)

And the screen looks great!  :thumb:

Very interesting. Looks like a laminair lip with a calsci bottom edge held on with Snowy's brackets.
These, if you've forgotten.

Thanks for the positive replies.

Rusty, I did a fair bit of searching for home made screen stuff but managed to miss that. There was a thread on the XRV forum about a bloke who made some brackets, his are much more professional. Quite right nothing from the wardrobe though, but if I needed to make it up and downable I'd spotted the drawer runners...

As for the shape of the screen, it was initially flat along the lower edge but didn't have much of a gap, so I cut the shape we have here. I'd love to say I did a significant amount of in depth wind tunnel testing, sadly this ain't Bigpie Industries with with millions in an R&D budget. I'd love to say I marked it out 1st, didn't do that either. Just cut it out with the jig saw and cleaned the edge up with a scotch brite pad.

Another positive I noted was a reduction in zumbers stuck to my visor. Win, win.

Ridaz, Martin and I have an understanding. No tongues.

Can't beat a bit of 'seat of the pants' inventiveness. My last Sat Nav bracket was born in a similar fashion, which for an engineer is unusual!

As for tongues, very wise...! Now which pikey has nicked the kitchen drawer runners?

I've just bought a glee stock screen on ebay. £6.50 plus p&p. Cheap enough to have a play with.
I'm just going to the shed, I may be some time.

I'm taking the coward's way out, TL. Just made an offer on this 381262087083 on ebay. 3 miles down the road from me. It'll go nicely on my £6.50 glee screen.
(Note to self: learn how to do the link thing from my phone! )
