I now have rather a number of tools lying around that I hope to lend out and get used, rather than keep them shut in a drawer somewhere. While most jobs on these fantastic machines can be done with standard tools, there are a number of cases where a special tool is either necessary, or useful to complete a job.
Proposed rules (comments/advice accepted):
1) The owner of the tool keeps it
2) The borrower pays postage both ways (or collects/delivers) plus a refundable deposit. This deposit is to discourage losses, and should help replace the tool if it is damaged or lost. For cheaper tools, the deposit could be the full value of the tool, but the more expensive bits of kit could make this prohibitive. Maybe the expensive ones require supervision? I don't know.
3) Anyone losing/damaging a tool is liable to be named and shamed :GRR: :haha:
I'll keep this first post updated with current rules and a list of tools/owners. I'll try to get the equivalent Suzuki part numbers too, but please double check these :)

1) Fork seal driver tool (will fit oil seals and dust seals. Quite a nice tool, can be used with or without stantions fitted, or even with the fork already attached to the bike!)
2) Clutch holder tool. Definitely fits the Wee, probably the Vee, maybe the Glee?
3) Crankshaft journal bearing tool - removes and re-fits the journal bearings on the crankshaft in the Wee. Not sure about Vee or Glee. I hope no-one ever actually needs this! You will also need a press, or mallet + firm nerve to use this tool!
4) Crankcase separator - works nicely, and should be fairly universal. Please don't use this as a flywheel puller!
5) Flywheel puller :) M20x1.5mm RH thread for the Wee. You will need some way of holding the crankshaft still to use this. Please note - my flywheel was stuck solid, and I couldn't shift it. The tool should work normally though.
6) Blind bearing puller. Quite useful, a decent range of attachments.
7) Tubeless tyre bead breaker - a sodding great lump, so only really useful if you visit me and/or collect it
There is other stuff too, I'll get a full list together later in the week.
Also on offer from myself is mechanical assistance. I don't pretend to be some god of engines, but if anyone is faced with something major and needs some help, I will help where I can! :fix:

I have a steering stem nut tool and a swingarm nut tool. I also have a once piece fork seal driver, heavy one that makes seal installation a hassle free job and ensures a perfect install every time. These are all up for loan providing postage is paid both ways, a timely return is ensured and they aren't mistreated. The won't be available for at least the next 2 months as I'll be needing them for putting the Strom back together.
Which blind bearing puller do you have, I need a good quality one, but want to buy my own. It's not something I'll borrow as it's too easily damaged if you have a difficult bearing to remove (like the damn swingarm and cushion linkage bearings :GRR: )

Super idea - put me down as a potential borrower (although I do have generic stuff like carbtune etc which I'd be happy to throw into the pot).
I did once suggest a similar idea for one of the Tiger forums but no-one seemed to be interested. Maybe Tiger owners are richer than V-strom owners so can buy their own?

Maybe Tiger owners need the tools more often and need to carry a complete set in their top box, whereas Strom owners only need one when the planets align and the lottery comes up and Arsenal win a trophy.

The tools aren't all that expensive, in some cases it might be better to buy the tool rather than borrow it if you take the postage costs into account. If you live close to someone that has it, some would rather borrow it if it's not something they're going to be using much more than once or twice a year. In other cases the tool is just so damn difficult to get hold of that borrowing is the best option (like the crank journal stuff mjc has.)
I'm a sucker for tools though, I like having my own so that I can do anything I need to at that impulsive moment that I decide I want to :)

Yup, quite a lot of stuff would be cheaper just to buy. That said, if it's a saturday evening and the bike needs fixing now, the ability just to collect a tool from a local-ish strommer is nice :)

Great idea. If I ever borrow any there'll be a few beers included with the deposit/return of the tool.

If any of the special tools are not too "special" in a fabricating sense then I would be up for making some in my Workshop offshore. All the toys are there...Lathe, Milling machine, Tig welding including Aluminium.

Tools, while useful to be able to borrow, its the experience hand at using them that would be of use to me.
I'm happy and able to change pads, discs, brake fluid and caliper seals, I've never changed fork oil for example.
Or when the manual says 'check' some thing, I can check that it is there (sometimes) but I wouldn't know what I was checking.
I'd rather go to the tool owners house and have them watch/guide me. I thought I'd seen something like that suggested on here, workshop days etc.
The most specialised tool I have is a torque wrench. 1/2 drive.

While TLPower was round earlier he pointed out my fork seal is leaking, damn, looks like a job for one weekend. Is the lending of the fork seal driver still on offer?

You could probably fix it by sliding a bit of film around the seal. Like this, but with a strip of photographic film instead of the posh tool <!-- s:) -->:)<!-- s:) -->

No rush, need to negotiate with the mrs when I can do the job. My dust seals are cracked anyway so might as we'll replace them. A tenner is fine, I was expecting closer to 40 as a deposit.
Now need to work out which fork oil to put in, I've read 5w from one isn't the same as 5w from another.

Job done.
I'll give it a few days to check the new seals aren't leaking, then I'll sent the tool back.

I don't have a carbtune, but I do have a 2 dial vacuum gauge from I used to balance my TBs

They might be, I've checked and I'm missing the hose extensions. The tails on them are about 5 cm. So they might not still reach both TBs.
Procedure is pretty simple iirc. Connect one gauge to on TB, then the other to same one, check they read the same, then plug on in to one and on in to other. Plenty of guides around on the web.

I've been looking on the web about the homemade manometers, thinking of trying one of those. Have you heard of anyone having any success with these?
Also do you know what dia the vacuum hose needs to be?

Bigpie I think we left the pipes connected to your previous 'bike.
Flyingscot, I have the same setup as bigpie. They use 5mm hoses but you need to use a reducer to control the dial "bounce". These are included in the kit.
You're more than welcome to borrow mine, or pop up and we can sort it one weekend. Check the TPS at the same time.

Anyone need loan of the clutch hub holding tool for taking out their clutch basket? I'm happy to put one or two in circulation. Can be passed on as and when required from owner to owner. No need for a deposit. Cost you the post to pass it on when the time comes.
Idea is the tool is posted on to you from the previous user. You need to use it twice. Once to take the basket out to send off for modification. Then a second time to fit the replacement/modified basket when it returns. Hold on to the tool for a while and post it on to the next person making a request here.
Please, please note. If your are taking a basket out to be rebuilt/modified or for something else I highly recommend use of this tool to save you damaging the actual clutch basket. Post cost to send it on would be up to £5 maximum. New baskets are over £200 and take near on a week to arrive. Ouch.
