10/40 semi synthetic is fine - as recommended by Suzuki.

I always used Putoline Sport 4 and had no problems (inc one 11,000 mile trip without an oil change or even needing to top up the oil  :o ).

Be aware that it is not just the grade of oil that matters (ie the 10/40 bit).  You will find that oil has an 'SAE' or 'AP' specification as well and motorcycle oil will be a different spec to car oils - different additives (particularly as a bike has a wet clutch which runs in the engine whereas a car will have a dry clutch).  Some of the additives in a car spec oil may give you clutch problems.

At the end of the day you do not need the super expensive top of the range synthetic oil - but at the other extreme I would not swant to save a few pounds by buying the cheapest stuff out there - the choice is up to you.

Shop around and do not be afraid to ask for a bit of a deal on a reasonable quality oil.

Hope this helps.

As I understand it, Stroms (both Wee and Vee) just need a good quality 10/40 oil.

You can use car oils if you like, but you mustn't use any with friction modifiers or, "eco" oils as these may do the clutch in.

Better to use motorcycle specific, but no need for fully synthetic, semi or even regular "Dino" oil is fine as long as it meets the required specs.

I was in our local Hein Gericke the other week, and they had their own brand oil at £13.00 for a 4 litre container, I'd be quite happy to use this, and it's a good price.

Just my tuppence worth.

You need to use motorcycle oil due to the shearing effect of the gears in the gearbox - the oil is for the engine and box combined.  Use a quality semi not fully synthetic to save any clutch slip problems.  I find that the red Castrol oil gives the best gear changes.

Not as I understood it Steve, I was led to believe that modern Car oil has special additives that reduce friction inside the engine which is rather a bad idea with a wet clutch system that most motorbikes have, hence the need for a separate oil, but yes semi-synthetic to protect the clutch.
(As I understand it, no offense intended)

And Putoline in my beastie <!-- s:mrgreen: -->:mrgreen:<!-- s:mrgreen: -->
