I wonder why they don't have drain plugs on fork legs. It would save me having to take the forks off just to change the oil.
Strangely enough, of all the bikes I've owned I only remember my Honda CM125 having drain plugs on the forks.

@Mr Nick, no rocks today. :lala:
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

See what your talk about fork oil has done Dave...

The specific WP fork cap tool is ordered, as is 2 litres of 5W oil - about 600ml per leg needed. It's not just the jack holding the bike up by the way: there's an axle stand right behind it and a strap holding the swingarm down as well.

Also went round all the bikes & reset the tyre pressures as the ones that haven't been out this year yet were a bit out. Yes, the temp on the 990 rear is 28 degrees as the heater was blowing at it: not the warmest day up here....

With regards to the flashing green light on the Optimate 3 as per my grumble of 22 May. I have found and now read the instruction booklet.
After charging to a voltage IRO 14.2 to 14.5 volts.....  it switches to .....
"Voltage retention test #5 Flashing"
"Delivery of current to the battery is interupted for 12 hours to allow the programme to determine the batteries ability to retain charge. For batteries with a good state of health LED#5 (green) should continue to flash for the full 12 hour period"
" * If charge delivery was less than 12 hours, test extends until 24 hours has elapsed."

Which is why the green light was flashing for longer than I expected.

Well, turns out that the upper sections are tapered on WP forks: damn near dropped one last night! There I was gently tapping away on the top of the fork to pop it out and things were moving slowly, and I just so happened to grab the fork to see if I could give it a twist when it cleared the top yoke & headed for the floor. It's a subtle taper between the 2 machined clamping sections, but enough to get my attention! That does make life so much easier than getting a parallel stanchion through both yokes as the SP3 was a complete bitch to do.

Oil is due Wednesday and I'll have to stick a cheap plastic measuring jug on my Asda order I'm collecting that evening as the wisdom of Kevinyorks on the KTM forum says put back in what comes out (if you have no leaks). It should equate to around 100mm air gap.

SV650:- Delkevic end can arrived in the post this morning. It looks good and sounds very nice and, best of all, is less that half the weight of the OE bin

That really suits the 'bike Dave. I also adore your red wheels. :)

But something is not right with the paint on those red wheels. Even wax polish produces a red polish off rag. I am thinking they have not got a lacquered finish. Not untypical of Suzuki finish. When I fitted the crash bars, the frame, into which the engine bolts mount, was bare metal under the washer free flange nuts and bolts. ###
And I found a way to make it even lighter - I removed the baffle....

Nice bike Brockett,
Looks like your bike and my strom have 2 things in common -  350mm Delkevic can (baffle in) and pyramid belly-pan :thumb:
May your God go with you...

Yeah, they're not lacquered if you're getting paint coming off on a rag. That would be an additional step that costs money so why would they: always better to defer costs to the end user to fix some time down the line.

Today I received the fork oil, but still no sign of the tool to get into the forks. Found a bracket on the radiator on the 990 that had paint missing so spent some time sorting that out.
The bike looks oddly like some kind of sci-fi hoverbike without the front suspension in it...

Still waiting for the fork tool but another trinket came instead:

As you'll see it's a voltage/capacity checker. I've stuck an XT60 plug on it so I can use it to check the state of the various batteries to see when I need to stick them back on the charger rather than just doing it as & when it feels about time.

128%

Turn that flux capacitor down!...

Oh wait volts  lol

I think I'll invest in one of those as I have no mains in the garage.

Link?

Still not fork cap tool and, despite emailing the shop a couple of times, nothing heard from them at all. It doesn't take much to pop a message on your site to say you're closed up & not processing orders, or even check the email box, so, 777mx, thanks for 2 wasted weeks.
I've managed to find another on fleabay that's quoting a week to deliver.

Since returning to work last week I've been using the Varadero to commute.
With the rain yesterday I swapped back to the XJ.

What I'd forgotten was that I had meant to bleed the brakes again after stripping them weeks ago when I replaced the shock.
I'd also changed the pads, so they needed bedding in, which I'd also forgot.

Then I forgot to check the tyre pressures
Then I forgot I'd drained most of the fuel out and put it in the Varadero.

So leaving for work, the bike didn't stop at the first junction, ran out of fuel after 500yrds and was a spongy 5 mile ride to work.  :shy:

The moral of this story.

When the bike had been layed up for a while, even if you haven't docked around with it, give it good look over before taking it anywhere.
