Exhaust advice
« on: March 31, 2021, 17:25:49 »
I have a 2014 dl
The box is on its way out
Could I just cut it and put a new box on or do I have to fit a whole exhaust
Thanks

They are 4/5 systems usually - you keep the original rear cyclinder header and replace the rest. The rear cylinder header would be very difficult to remove! I bought a Black Widow - cheap and pretty good quality.

Is the current exhaust an after market or the stock box?  The complete factory / stock exhaust system is normally stainless steel, from the header pipes through to the silencer. The stock system is designed to last the life of the bike, unless someone has altered / replaced it.

As Gert says, the OE system is usually fully stainless.
What is it that makes you think the current system is on the way out of you don't mind me asking?

It's the silencer bit
The piece of metal that sticks out at the end rotted off a few years ago
Now it seems to getting very noisy

Ah OK, the exhaust tip that pokes out in the centre of the end cap yes? Not sure what that's made of to be fair but bits rotting away does sound less than ideal. Maybe pop a photo up if you can just to be sure.

It might also be worth checking the joints for blow by regarding the noise issue, exhaust clamps (especially the rear) have been known to rot and fail which allows a tiny leak which eventually burns through the gaskets and causes a much bigger leak.
Replacing with OEM looks like it's all one piece bar the two header pipes off the cylinders. Bit of a job and some new gaskets but nothing too daunting (apart from the price if using a new Suzuki part).
After market appear to come with or without front header pipe depending on brand.
As Sea-Strom says, accessing to replace a rear header pipe is a nightmare but shouldn't be needed here.
