DL1000AL8 (2018) Whining Noise
« on: November 24, 2025, 18:44:51 »
blokes,

I could use your wisdom.

I recently had a major maintenance service performed.

A few days ago, I noticed a strange whining noise after I turned the key. Irrelevant of the kill switch position.
---
If I press the ignition button, the noise stops immediately. When I release the ignition button, the nose comes back.
---
After around 20-25 seconds, the noise fades away and disappears on its own.
---
After waiting it out, if I turn the key again on/off, the noise doesn’t come back.
---
If I leave the bike off sitting for 30 minutes, and then turn the key again, it whines again.

Link to the video with sound:

I installed an LED bulb with a fan not too long ago. Could it be a fan whine?

My ignition button sometimes struggles with contact. After I start the bike and get moving, occasionally I have to fiddle with it a few times to get the lights on.

The bike starts perfectly every time I press the ignition button, even below freezing outside. Battery voltage is perfect; it’s a new Yuasa.

Any ideas?

Hi Chef, I reckon you've already answered the question.
Before you do anything else, revert back to the original bulb, if you then still get the noise, it's sounding like a very noisy fuel pump.
Maybe just pull the fuse for the headlights instead of ripping it apart again.

Davey,

Thanks for the reply. I'll perform the bulb test.
I thought about the fuel pump, but shouldn't it stay disconnected if the kill switch is off?

Seconded on bulb.
Assuming the 2018 starter button is similar to prior generations......
Strip, clean and grease the ignition button.
If it is making intermittent contact on the headlight circuit then there's a good chance it will arc and burn out the connector which means new switch gear.
Headlight relays are a popular addition but the need for them can be avoided with a bit of regular maintenance on that switch.
I can do a quick step by step at some point if you need but it's pretty easy, just pay careful attention to the placement of the parts on disassembly.
P.s The small copper contact on the push button is captivated but it should be sprung to create pressure on the contact block, if it gets sticky then you get bad contact and arcing. Make sure this is free before putting it all back together. A bit of dielectric grease will keep things from shorting easily across the terminals and help keep that sprung contact free.

*If it's making the noise with the switch set to 'kill' then bulb I reckon.
Your video also sounds very much like a failed graphics card fan, although that might not be a scientific diagnosis 😂

Mr. Rixington,

Thanks for the input. I will definitely have the ignition button assembly inspected and perform necessary maintenance. There is a good post on Stromtrooper that already describes the process.

Cheers!

Yeah, sounds like a fan in distress, definitely... That was my first association, too. But then, some bloke I know mentioned a fuel line squealing while trying to 'prime the fuel pump' (?), which made me nervous.

Good luck, hope it's just the bulb, and that they're easier to change than some of the latest machines seem to be.

Thanks.
Luckily, the one for the long beam has the fan... Auxito brand. Garbage...
Anyhow, it was just a temp fix until I get this done: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/173bx6U7aL/

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking..!
Confused as hell, but at least I know which end of a spanner to hit a nut with!
