DL1000 engine wanted - 2017-21

Hi everyone,

A mate of mine bought a 2017 v strom 1000 and after 700km the engine blew up basically. The dealer ain't taking any responsibility and the manufacturer pretty much wants the cost of another used v strom to fix it.

I'm looking for an engine that will fit the bike, I believe any DL1000 from 2017 to 2021 fits but I do have to confirm that.

If anyone has one that wants to sell or has an idea to point me to the right direction by all means I'm all ears.

I was assuming 700kms since purchased (second hand) rather than from new.
Either way, I'd be looking at suing the dealer unless it was owner error.

The Doctor 46, this engine is from 2007 Vstrom. I doubt it will fit 2017+

I should have said it, he bought it second hand. It had 19000km when he bought and since smthen he only did 700km.

He told me the bike was running fine until one morning he took it out and not even 500m after he heard a clicking sound coming out of the engine. I think he stopped there and then but, myself, I find it odd the type of damage done without "prewarning". Either or, I'm just giving a helping hand 😂

Those engines on ebay I have checked them but they are from other years/versions and I was told it wouldn't fit his- I'm waiting for my mate to tell me if the 2014-2016 engine fits or not or if just needs some tweek to it ..

I thought a dealer was bound to warranty a used bike for 6 months from date of purchase

Your consumer rights trump any warranty provided, don't mistake a warranty for them.

Faults that occur in the first 6 months the dealer has to prove that the product (in this case, the bike) was fit for purpose, of satisfactory quality, and as described. After this 6 months, it's then up to you to prove that it wasn't. There is a further bit for the first 30 days, but as that's likely passed, I won't go into it.

Basically, I'd be going back to the dealer and asking them to fix it nicely, if they refuse again I'd quote the law (Consumer Rights Act 2015) at them. Have a look if they're a member of the motor ombudsman, and then follow the complaints process (likely a formal complaint to the garage, then give them time to sort it out, followed by referral to the ombudsman).

If you paid more than £100 towards it (deposit included) on a credit (not debit) card, then you can also hold your card company jointly liable under s.75 of the Consumer Credit Act. You may be able to send a claim to them for a full/partial refund (of cost of engine replacement).

I'm with purplebikeunicorn.
Your friend needs to acquaint himself with the Consumer rights Act, go back to where he purchased the bike & have a discussion with the 'boss'.
I have had personal dealings with an Ombudsman (in my case for furniture) & found them very thorough & excellent to deal with. Keep all correspondence both written & spoken (make notes as soon as possible after any conversation, phone calls etc complete with dates & then date & sign the paper it's written on) it could be very useful if you have to make a statement & go to court.
In my case (on behalf of my parents) the 'offenders' were given prison sentences for criminal activity. It did take over three years from start to finish though, but very satisfying.

The motor ombudsman was very backlogged when I used them, but they were very helpful and seemed extremely proactive/consumer focused.

Hopefully it won't get that far though, I bet he wants his bike fixed!
