Soft Panniers and Heat from Exhaust
« on: September 28, 2021, 10:56:45 »
I know this topic of soft or hard panniers has been covered hundreds of time but I just have a simple question.
I'm looking at getting Lomo soft waterproof panniers. The only concern I have is the heat from the exhaust, has anyone experienced damage or problems?
thanks

Only with the original silencers on the KTM which have the cat at the front of them: they got stupid hot & melted pretty much any synthetic fabric which touched them. Swapping to Leo Vinces gave me silencers I can even touch when in use.

Doesn't look like anyone either had any problems or no one knows :)

I made wee brackets to hold the panniers up and straight as they drop to nearly touching the exhaust. The exhaust is not super hot but I'd not risk it. A few bits of metal and some piping from B&Q and I was sorted.
I now see Shad and Cosmo make soft pannier supports, I'd  buy these.

I decided to try Lomo panniers on my 2020 XT and was also concerned about damage from the exhaust. Your bike may have a different silencer setup, but the pics below show the solution for my bike, chosen because for width reasons I wanted the RH pannier to sit above the exhaust.  The frames are an old pair that I already had, modified to position the bags correctly.  The “shelves” are attached only when the panniers are being used, this takes just a few minutes.  I’ve probably over engineered this, the solution for your model may be much simpler.

The Lomo bags seem very well made and are surprisingly spacious. My intention is to fit engine bars plus the Lomo crash bar bags, this should give us plenty of capacity.

You are a clever man. You could have made the shelf fold up (like a BMW) and left them on permanent. I recon you could sell them for a fair profit on this site if you were interested. Fortunately my bike came with hard panniers which I like for their size and security but they do make riding in heavy traffic very slow as I am very restricted when filtering. I wish I could make stuff like this.
