Made a mistake
STORMY:
Fitting a new visor to my helmet (Shoei GT Air 2), didn’t realise (or think!) the base plate screws were JIS not Phillips (my eyesight didn’t see the dot on the screw head). The inevitable cam out occurred, and I went onto to completely mash the head (twat).
Bearing in mind this is a crash helmet (so no heavy shocks), other than using a Dremel to cut a slot, can anybody recommend a good tool that’s low impact to remove this sucker. I’m not keen on drilling the thing out, just saying.
Mr Nick:
Unless you can get a hold of it with good cutters/pliers/vice grips, the Dremel option is probably your best bet now that it looks like you've already effectively drilled the head out - did you not get the idea it wasn't coming out a little sooner?
STORMY:
Hello Mr Nick - I haven’t drilled it yet, but I kid you not the material used on these screws is extremely soft. When I thought about it that’s probably to stop anybody over stressing the fastening and compromising the shell of the lid, and yes you’re completely correct no excuses I’ve butchered it like a rank amateur when I used a torx bit to try and free it.
So plenty of tape surrounding the cutting area, and the smallest cutting disc I can source I assume, so angry with myself.
Oop North John:
Maybe try a left-handed drill bit driven the "correct" way as that'll tend to undo the screw?
Mr Nick:
Yeah, that might do the job: I just think few people have them so don't suggest trying that.
